No, that's the way it's supposed to work. Sending mail via the Gmail [web] interface isn't the same as sending via Thunderbird. In the first case, Gmail is formatting the SMTP statements, and in the second, Thunderbird is, and Thunderbird is using the Gmail account, not the Hotmail account. Gmail does its own thing within its interface that Thunderbird doesn't do--the integration doesn't exist between Gmail and Thunderbird which allows Gmail to treat mail sent from Thunderbird using the Gmail account to be formatted as though it were being sent from the Hotmail account; Gmail doesn't behave as a proxy in that sense. I haven't actually played around with this lately, but that's the way it was working the last time I did, and apparently still is. Of course, inspecting the headers from either type message will show that all such messages are really sent from Gmail, even if a partial header displayed in a client (which shows just the 'From:') seems to indicate that it came from Hotmail.

was just trying to fetch. sent it asked me for PW and now i can get hotmail in TB i had tried it before so i am thinking that it was/is an isp issue.

Tb should simply show the Hotmail messages as being addressed to the Hotmail account (To: user@hotmail.com); you'll see Hotmail in the headers, too, if you inspect them (Fetch-Info/Received), but Tb is still picking them up from Gmail (obviously). And even if you have a Hotmail identity for Gmail SMTP, it'll still be sent via Gmail (which really just sets a Reply-To for Hotmail instead of Gmail).

The only thing I can think of right now to take an ISP out of the mix is to use a VPN/proxy/anonymizer for your connection (POPing to Gmail is itself a sort of proxy). You haven't been able to use Tb to POP directly from Hotmail. Does that mean you haven't been able to send via SMTP, too? (Just wondering if you tried; you mentioned setting the port to 587 but not whether you'd tried sending.)

i think that may be the case. the oddity is that both my self and my client have two separate ISP's mine is sat link based out of UK his i dunno about but he is in Thailand.

trying to get him a single sign in point for his email. even though the hotmail is pop'd to his gmail in the TB client the POP'd hotmail is showing as coming from the gmail account when it is supposed to show as hotmail.

OK, it sounds like Gmail has no problem picking up your Hotmail messages, so, no problem with your account. And your Tb settings are what they're supposed to be. Could your ISP be the problem? (I mean, if the Hotmail account has no problem with POP/SMTP based on Gmail being able to access it, and Tb settings follow the guidelines provided by Hotmail and match those used successfully by others, then it has to be something between the server and the client getting in the way--first guess is usually the ISP.)

grail yes i did change with no effect.

my gmail and aol mail work fine in TB just not hotmail.

the reason i don't pop the hotmail to the gmail is that when using thunderbird and replying to the hotmail somehow the address isn't getting done right looks like frm gmail rather than hotmail. even though when using web browser it works fine. that's the only reason i want hotmail in TB.

Outgoing Server SMTP Port: 25 ...
Is your ISP is "Blocking Port 25" ? Try changing the "Outgoing server (SMTP):" to "587". If that does not work contact your ISP to verify if they're blocking Port 25 and if so which port to use.

I know with AT&T (SBC) So. CA (USA) users have to use 587 for the Outgoing server (SMTP) port setting for sending email via email servers other than AT&T's.

The settings you have are the settings I use, and they've been working fine for me (for months now). I have to wonder that it's not a Thunderbird problem. Thing is, I POP my Hotmail account mail to Gmail now instead of using Thunderbird (though I still occasionally access the messages via Tb--several other accounts setup there). You may want to try something similar if only to test your account's support for POP/SMTP.

well, those are my settings, too. Have you got Automatically download new messages checked? Otherwise, what exactly is your problem?

I have not used Tb since moving to Outlook but your settings look correct based on MS's Hotmail setup instructions. The one thing I would check is:

Outgoing Server TLS or SSL Secure Encrypted Connection: Yes (On or Required)

Change that to "TLS if available"

See what happens.

If you are still having problems there is the Web Mail extension for Tb that handles Hotmail, GMail to name a couple.

I could be wrong, but isn't pop only for any country except the US? Then again, post what you're settings are.

Okay here goes. I have looked all over and may have missed it but how do you get free hotmail working on thunderbird? i saw on the hotmail FAQ's they have extended POP3 to all email now. Have applied recommended settings to no avail.
