[HD] Just switched from Comcast to FIOS

And am very disappointed in the HD quality. With Comcast I got perfect picture quality every time on any HD channel. However with the new FIOS install it looks like I am getting only 720P on the HD channels. Yes I have a HD Panasonic Plasma with 1080p and an HDMI cable and have set the STB to 1080i. I am also using the same cables that I had with Comcast. Everyone who has seen the picture quality previously on Comcast has said what is the problem with your TV? If I did not know better I would think the HD picture is great. But having had it on Comcast for two years I have high expectations. I do not want to cahnge back to Comcast becasue the Internet is far superior on FIOS (the phone is the same). I have a feeling that the feed from FIOS is not 1080i but 720p and no matter what I do it cannot fixed (that is the pessimist in me). Anyone else have any similar experiences? Anyone have a clue as to what might be causing the problem?

I'm not sure what the problem is but Vz does not do further compression on whatever they get from the original content providers. Channels like HDNet, Universal HD, etc are definitely being sent to you in 1080i.

How do you have your set top boxes connected to your TV precisely? Component? HDMI? Something else?

Which set top boxes do you have? (model numbers are important). You may need to go into Menu / Video Settings / Video Format and make sure everything is set up correctly there as well. (Also take a look at Menu / Video Settings / SD Override and try OFF initially)

You may need to adjust your settings on your TV. What brand/model is it?

Re: [HD] Just switched from Comcast to FIOS

I have a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV connected HDMI to the HD STB. When I power on the Sony, it briefly shows me a display that includes the signal it is receiving. It says 1080i.

My HD picture quality is stunning on HD channels. Since IMG 1.6.2 was released, even SD signals are vastly improved.

Time to check all your settings as darcilicious detailed.

I know you said you set the box to 1080, maybe the setting didn't stick?

Maybe I am missing the obvious. The STB is set to 1080i ( I have changed this so many times). HOWEVER...when I change the setting do I need to power cycle the STB for it to take effect or does it take effect immediately?

kyma

@att.net
That is what I am thinking. I just posted a question asking if anyone knows if the FIOS STB needs to be power cycled after I make the change from 720 to 1080???

My FiOS HD STB was 1080i out of the box so I never changed it. You could just try to power cycle it. What model Panasonic do you have?

And, what do you mean by "after I make the change from 720 to 1080." What are you changing?

On the remote I change the settings in video from 720p to 1080i. And I never did a power cycle. How can I verify the STB is really outputting 1080i to the TV?

What does your TV report? Mine reports 1080i ...

Can verify that connection from STB to TV is 1080i? That at least eliminates that angle... you might still have believe that they are just up-scaling 720p at the head-end or something, but the truth is that FIOS TV does look same/better then Comcast in nearly all cases that I've found.

It also makes no sense for VZ to add compression or down-scaling--they have a major technical advantage over the coax based providers in this situation, why compromise that?

Re: [HD] Just switched from Comcast to FIOS

How do you verify that? (1080i from STB?)

As I said in my first post, with the HD STB already tuned to an HD channel and powered on, when I first turn on the Sony HDTV, the TV displays some basic information which includes input signal information and it shows it is receiving a 1080i signal on the selected HDMI input from the VZ HD STB. The TV turns this display info off after about 45 seconds.

This display is a function of the firmware in my Sony HDTV.

That's why I asked what model Panasonic you had. Check your TV's Owners Manual to see if there is a function in its setup menu to display signal information on its available inputs.

^^ what he said about the manual.

also

There may be an 'info' or 'display' button on the TV's remote.

You can also turn OFF the TV and bring up the FIOS cable box diagnostic screen to verify the settings are 'set' by the STB.

I just verified that using the Display button on my TV's remote brings up this same information. So, it is independant verification that the TV is, in fact, receiving a 1080i HD signal on the HDMI input that is connected to the VZ HD STB.

When I tune the STB to an SD channel and press Display on the TV remote, it shows that there is a 480i SD signal coming in on the HDMI input that is connected to the VZ HD STB, as I would expect.

Check your remote/manual to see if this information can be displayed on your Panasonic.

As no one else has asked this yet, what model STB's do you have?
Also, just out of pure curiosity, where are you located? The "att.net" location on your anon user profile makes me wonder.

But I did ask that. And a couple of other questions, most of which have not been answered by the OP

Hanover Massachusetts. FIOS was installed on Monday afternoon (6-29-2009). I am at work and cannot look up the model number of the box but I believe it is something like a 6200. it would be great if I was on the forum while actually troubleshooting the issue but I am at work and trying to gather as much info before I (hopefully) meet the tech at my house at 4:00PM.

Also, which channels are you looking at? Some channels are available in SD as well as HD. If you are watching a SD channel and it is being upscaled to 1080i by the STB, then the TV would say it is receiving a 1080i signal, but it wouldn't be close to the quality of a HD channel.

Re: [HD] Just switched from Comcast to FIOS

I too am curious what channels you are watching. FiOS has far more HD channels than Comcast, but many of the newer channels only offer a very limited amount of HD (upconverted SD most of the time).

Now that the tech has come and gone, I bet kyma is off enjoying all the HD goodness
