Secure browser by default

I've followed most of the topics on this in the past, but always sided with my favourite still.

How ever, I've had enough of the endless bandwidth taken up by the countless communications. Free must be subsidised somehow, so I can't blame Opera's methods, but for me it isn't what I want. I've tried early Firefox and it's mail client Thunderbird, and let's not go Firefox with NoScript either.

What's left out there that is worth looking at, even paid is worth a look in, if it is secure by default. Opera 9.64 still has exploits that haven't been fixed and so does other popular browsers, but I'm not going Opera 10 again, even if it is the closest to perfection in some levels, whereby in the past it was a horror for some web pages.

If I was to look at another browser, no Opera, no Firefox and no IE shell browsers, what is left for the front page of my computer that will show internet pages, but still be configurable too while being a good solid secure browser?

I'm open to ideas as I'm all browsered out at present.

I'm with you. You have to jump through hoops to get anything to work your way. If you don't like and "improvement" some people in the browser's forums get all upset that you don't want the internet their way. I've managed to tweak FF 30.10 the way I want it, can't find the post in Opera about how to get rid of widgets on the tool bar and the speed dial. I don't want all the extras either - just choice about scripts running, popups, and ads.

There aren't any. If Firefox with a single plugin is too much work for you, you're going to be disappointed.

I assume you mean on the Menu Bar.

•Close Opera and open the standard_menu.ini file

•Comment out the widget submenu line thus:

;Submenu, M_WIDGET_MENU, Browser Widgets Menu

and the speed dial.

•In your address bar, type:

opera:config#Speed Dial State

•Then change Speed Dial value to 3

•Save and restart Opera.

Good idea. Lynx is impervious to script exploits.

edit: I should have specified it as "javascript exploits." There are other kinds of scripts that might be possible on various platforms.

I don't mind the plugins - I really like NoScript, Adblock Plus, Flashblock, & Mr. Tech. What I really resent is some of the smart answers on the Mozilla Forums if you ask how to get rid of something or change it. They seem to be stunned if you don't take everything new as an improvement. If the browser is supposed to be customized, then list all of the customizations in one place so they can be found.
Thanks for the info on Opera. I'm copying it to a file so I can find it again.
I might download Lynx and use it when just looking for info.
My kids have some videos on YouTube that I like to see, so I couldn't use Lynx as a primary.

Never been there, and used firefox for quite some time.
I use dslreports mozilla forums.
Always recieve great help/advice there.

edit;
Also, there is a list of all extensions on there extensions page, a list of all addons on addons page and even a themes page with a list. Our own mozilla forums has a sticky guide for tweaks that make FF speedy and our own users are pro-like imo when it comes to FF and Thunderbird.

Opera 9.64
Does an update once in a while, have not found a setting to turn off.
Clear browser history, needs connection to refresh speeddial, which I do not use.
Opera 10
Every time I open the browser it checks online
Delete browser history connects to 4 or 5 IP for similar reasons to 9.64
95% of the time first opening bookmarks checks online, for whatever reason

It's a lot going on for me just wanting to visit the WWW.

I'm one of those that check my own updates for software.

I've never had Opera update on its own. It will say that there's an update available. No history is showing at all. I've never kept history. If browsers change bookmarks the way Chrome was said to - I'll have to post links in notepad, or find a tweak to put notes in FF.
Thanks, Ironwalker, I'll have to read the Mozilla forum here. I forgot what tweak I had to use to get FF to download since I have IE locked down tight. My daughter is still having to download thru Opera.

Tried those settings and unselected all sync options but still get the internet connections on doing a delete of browsing history in 9.64.

The other browsers I will have a look over in the next few days; thanks for the links.

The Secure Browser that I recommend is IRON.

The company: »www.srware.net/en/

The Browser: »www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php

What does Iron make that's different? »www.srware.net/en/software_srwar···iron.php

Agreed, Iron is fast and secure, but I still prefer Opera.
Iron got 100/100 on the acid3 test, where opera got an 85 on my machine.

I'm sorry but no browser is 100% secure. If you are expecting a browser to actually think for you, then you might want to realize that the technology is not that far along.

Because lets not beat around the bush here..a browser can only do so much until that person has to think for their own which is right and bad. You can have the most secure software/hardware--but if the operator doesn't know what he is doing, there are going to be problems.

Sounds to me like you need a Mac OS--Linux..no. Barely any software is supported on that, so unless you don't use alot of software sure go ahead and install Linux.

Are you sure nothing else other than browsing history is selected for deletion?
I'm asking because I've tested both 9.64 / 10 beta1 and can't confirm.
After all be aware in case you also select 'bookmark visited time' and/or 'delete entire cache' Opera will attempt to download some favicons. This unfortunate 'feature' was implemented to overcome complains regarding the loss of favicons after deleting private data. A poor workaround IMHO.
Opera doesn't offer an option to stop these requests.
Possible workarounds for deleting 'bookmark visited time':
- delete offline
- put the favicons URLs on a block list
Possible workarounds for deleting the cache:
- delete offline
- delete manually within Opera's cache4 (v9.64) / cache (v10 beta) folder

If you're going to rule out the Big Three (of Windows browsing, anyway) engines (Presto, Gecko, and Trident) and accept nothing based on them, then you're left with Webkit, used by Safari and Chrome/Iron, text browsers, and obscure stuff no one's ever heard of.

Otherwise I'd say, give SeaMonkey or K-Meleon a shot, or even Lunascape5, which is a fairly interesting browser which can use Trident, Gecko, and Webkit.

Iron is one of my favorites too. I only wish that WOT worked on it, though.
