Paint Mastic Tape

I know it isn't standard, but I was wondering if mastic is paintable? (this is the hand moldable stuff)

Is mastic naturally UV resistant or does it need the electrical tape over it to make it so.

It gets all rotten and oxidized without the vinyl tape over it.

and buzzards will peck it without the tape, they will still do it with tape but it doesnt seem as frequent

yes, its paintable, and no, other than birds you dont need to tape it, it stays pliable forever. We use andrews brand, expensive, but well worth it. But tape it if you have birds, lil bastards

what about using a colored electrical tape?

I don't think colored e-tape is UV resistant. I did some colored marking back in 2006 and the colors have completely faded.

Again, I can you tell from experience the vapor sealant will start to weather after a few years. I've seen some stuff that was around maybe 15 years old and it was bad.

There is some sort of colored electrical tape that is UV resistant. I have seen it used at many cell cites to color code coax. I don't know who made it or where to get it.

I just remembered RFS makes a silicone color coded tape for use. Supposedly it is UV resistant.

3M makes colored tape. It is used for marking purposes only. It is like 1/2 inch wide. I use it all the time.

It's a good idea to put a couple of wraps around mastic. Otherwise, when it gets hot the "ooage" can creep and get all over anything that touches it (e.g. you).

3M Super 33+ is UV resistant.

So should the paint keep it from oxidizing?

Well, I had a box with a bad hole in it, so I covered it with mastic, I am just going to replace the whole damn thing anyways. What a waste of time that was!

So this is not being used to seal cables then?

I was recently out and came across a site that was painted. The painters painted everything, including the cable, tape, etc.

They did that because they were painters and not RF gurus. Most of the painters in my area are great guys, but they are all stoners. They think a great day at work is to burn a few and then paint all day. I was told "It helps to pass the time and makes a boring day fun".

not in this case it wasn't. But I abandoned that and am just putting in a new box, it isn't worth the hassle and possible future leaks.

This is true. I met some painters once, they were touching up a hot am tower (powered off of course). They are insane.

We always put some super33 tape around the mastic. For the extra protection from elements and birds. They like to peck at it for nests.
