| reply to cahiatt Re: So who's going to line up to pay $9.99/mo for turn-by-turn?
said by cahiatt :I just entered my Sprint phone number and pin from the Telenav service Sprint includes for free and it works great... Thanks for the great tip! I wasn't sure if just downloading it would cause me to get billed automatically by AT&T. I already pay 9.99 for it on my Sprint BlackBerry because I have had one too many times where I am in a pinch and need it.
My Sprint phone number worked great! Thanks again |

I'm guessing you haven't driven in the Greater Boston MA area lately; "those road signs" are sometimes scarcer than hen's teeth and can be far more confusing than watching the arrow. Given the number of one-way streets and "No Turn" signs, it isn't as easy as it might seem. Remember the phrase "Can't get there from here"? When I was writing that post, I actually had something written about "unless you live in a place like Boston", but deleted it. Now I haven't been there in 25 years, but I remember how just getting one block over might mean zig-zagging all over the place.
For people who travel a lot for work (sales reps, etc.) I can see how valuable these things are. I just find the nav systems amusing because I know A LOT of people who buy these (because I guess they are a current "toy), and the people hardly ever travel! And when they do, they always go to the same place. -- 512Ke, LC, Classic, Qudra 605, Centris 610 AV,Performa 6112, PM 6500, Cube, iMac G4 17", iMac 24", PB 5300, PB 3400, PB G4, and a few PCs |

1 edit | reply to neuronbob I know I wouldn't. If you jailbreak your iphone you can download XGPS which works pretty damn well for being free especially since it also does voice nav. No complaints from me since I got it. -- Looking to get into Avaya telco if you might be in that field hit me up I have a lot of questions. |

WOW I must be old school. I usually know where im going without GPS. If I dont know where it is im going I look it up on Map Quest and then go there. Mapquest I feel has gone down hill over the past year or two. I have had multiple instances where they have mapped out a much longer route, have given wrong turns (left vs right) or had wrong street names. When I print out directions I use Google Maps. Nahh, I know exactly where Pepe is coming from. We don't use Map Quest or Google Maps for the actual driving directions. We just look at a map, figure out where we have to go, and drive there! I can't see what is so hard about that. I could never imagine trying to drive somewhere by blindly following "turn right here, left there" sheep instructions. To be following cheesy artificial intelligence would make me feel completely blind driving. Turn off the Garmins and Tom Tom's people; those road-signs really do work if you look out the window and read them! Ok. Rant off. Correct, that is the best way to go but if I am heading into Boston etc it's not always easy to be reading a map/driving at the same time. -- "So, Lone Starr, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

| reply to neuronbob Mapquest and google maps have both lead to some interesting times getting around San Francisco before. It is, but if you are going to be the self-proclaimed expert in a small town you've never heard of, it pays to know which of the streets are one-way. Names don't give clues. | reply to outtherenost said by outtherenost :Sprint Pre = Free turn by turn and even mutes Pandora radio or other music when using GPS. Service is included at no extra charge and works very well. It's not "free", it's just included in the $99 Everything plan. If you decide for whatever reason not to take the $99 Everything plan, then it costs $9.99/mo, like all the other competitive navigation services. |

| reply to neuronbob I piss away a lot of money on services. I have no problem with my $180+ cable bill, the $75 AT&T bill for my iPhone, $80 for Sprint for my real cell service from Nextel and XM and Sirius, but no way would I pay an additional dime for subscription GPS. Why? I can get a Garmin or Tom Tom for a onetime cost. Personally I'm saving up the $1500 to get the Lincoln factory nav system put in my SUV. | reply to neuronbob I don't imagine that it will work for the Iphone, but MS had a free GPS ap for the MinMo phones that did turn by turn w/ real time tracking, movie times, weather, restaurants, etc. It did require a data plan. As far as ATT offering GPS, that has been around for atleast 3 years on their other smart phones for $9.99. Not sure if it requires a data plan though. |

| reply to tcope said by tcope :What you fail to mention is that Navigator also adds real time routing based on traffic. So google is free and does not offer voice, turn by turn or navigation based on traffic, AT&T offers these things for $10 month. I'm not saying it's worth it... only that you did not post much of what makes the service different. Garmin XT has traffic for free. -- PRescott7-2097 |
