I agree EG, but I personally have had alot of issues with my comcast service, not to say that wouldn't happen with FiOS.
Understood.

Conversely, I've had CC for eight years and I know of only three short term outages with my service.

Absolutely; and I've had Comcast at my old address for 11 years and at my new address for 4 years with little or no trouble.

You can get a discount on the CHSI installation (in most areas) if you order over the phone. Online, its a flat rate of $99.

In chicago, its also $99 or over the phone $50, with the discount. If you order Cable and/or Phone, you can set up CHSI yourself.

Only reason why you cant set it up yourself without any other services, is beacuse there is no active line going to the house, in most cases.

My installation was only $34.95, but the tech was late so it was only $14.95

Thank you guys for all the help and answers.

Anyways I called Comcast business services; a very nice and courteous agent helped me. I found out that the company I work for offers me the option to choose Comcast Business Class Teleworker.

I asked the agent what this was and how it was different from residential:
1) 16D/2U speed; however speeds are not actually capped. That's the speed I'm guaranteed, not capped to; in times of low use I can get as high a speed as they can offer. I guess I should get a DOCSIS 3.0 modem then.
2) I'm not limited to 250GB/month; the guy actually said quote, "You're not limited to 250GB a month which means you can download as much as you want." That's pretty nice.
3) 24 hour support technician turnaround—I should get my service restored within a few hours of calling.

So yeah I decided that the better support and more lenient service was worth the price; it costs $60 a month. I signed up already—I'm moving in 3 weeks and have already set an appointment up. The only thing I don't get is a static IP, but I guess I'm okay with not having that.

I hope I don't have to experience the horror stories I've heard about over the years.

Good work, I hope it works out for you!

Are you sure that the speeds are uncapped, i know that they have powerboost, but that is only for ~ the first 40Mb of a file though...

Unfortunately I really won't know for sure until I get their service and download a few files.

Again that's what the agent told me when I asked him about the Teleworker plan.

I actually just found they give me a modem every month at no charge.

Since I'll be using my own modem (either as a standalone or as a module for my ISR), should I keep the modem I'm given and return it only when canceling my service or should I just not accept it when the technician comes to set up my service?

I guess it is always good to have a spare, so why not keep it if it is free.

Hi guys…

Wanted to post an update. I had Comcast service set up on Friday afternoon. A friendly tech came on time. He called 15 minutes, 5 minutes, and when he arrived. Very courteous—entirely not what I expected. He was quick and the set up was 5 minutes. Apparently for commercial class service they don't do any configuration; it's just plug and play.

After he left I realized the internet didn't connect. My fault for not testing it. I called CS and they sent another tech after about 30 minutes who swapped out the modem they gave me and everything worked. I will replaced the modem they gave me later. The first modem was an RCA-branded modem and when the second technician came I asked if I could get a Motorola Surfboard instead; again it was a swift "sure I can check" and next thing we know, I've got a Surfboard set up.

Now as with speeds, I downloaded a bunch of files about 500MB each and I averaged about 2.5MB/s, so if we assume 8 bits per byte, that's more than the 16Mbps that I've been guaranteed which makes this more than spectacular.

That said, I am entirely satisfied with Comcast at the moment; all those horror stories seem less than justified. I hope to have a good experience with them.

Anyways, thanks to everyone for answering my questions from before.

I believe I have read here that the soft cap for business is .75TB for 12/2, 1.5TB for 22/5, and "a lot" for 50/10

I'm on 12/2 business class, and run between 180-260GB/mo

According to the AUP I signed, they can decided I am using more then average for businesses in my tier and offer me to either move to a higher tier or terminate.

Anyone can get business class - just call the business order line and see if you can get it at your home address. You can be a home business, self-employed, a teleworker, whatever.

I needed the 5 static IPs, so that's why I'm a business class account.

I can tell you there is NO way you will be able to run 1TB or more a month through a residential account without tripping the "too much" flag.

I read through most of the threads/FAQs, but still have a few questions:

I will be moving [temporarily] to an area where they offer only Comcast. I'm looking to either get the Ultra or Extreme; however I have read the speeds are based on "PowerBoost" which I have not a clear idea to what that is,

it's a way to trick you into thinking you have a faster speed then your paying for

and to inflate Overall On speedtests

I understand anyone can get business class service. If there is indeed a soft cap then the lady who set my account up lied through her teeth.

As with getting flagged for a higher tier... I wouldn't mind getting a faster tier, since I'm already on the fastest one they offer. If they give me a faster one I'll take it.

I can live with a 1.5TB cap though.

Did you *read* the service agreement you signed?

It's right there.

»business.comcast.com/terms-condi···dex.aspx

Specifically in the AUP
»www.comcast.com/Corporate/shop/b···use.html
quote:
Are there restrictions on data consumption that apply to the Service?
The Service is for commercial use only in a small, medium, or large business as determined by the applicable Business Services Agreement. Therefore, Comcast reserves the right to suspend or terminate Service accounts where data consumption is not characteristic of a typical commercial user of the Service as determined by the company in its sole discretion, or where it exceeds published data consumption limitations. Common activities that may cause excessive data consumption in violation of this Policy include, but are not limited to, numerous or continuous bulk transfers of files and other high capacity traffic using (i) file transfer protocol (“FTP”), (ii) peer-to-peer applications, and (iii) newsgroups. Your business must also ensure that its use of the Service does not restrict, inhibit, interfere with, or degrade any other person’s use of the Service, nor represent (as determined by Comcast in its sole discretion) an overly large burden on the network. In addition, your business must ensure that its use of the Service does not limit or interfere with Comcast’s ability to deliver and monitor the Service or any part of its network.

If your business uses the Service in violation of the restrictions referenced above, that is a violation of this Policy. In these cases, Comcast may, in its sole discretion, suspend or terminate your business’ Service account or request that it subscribe to a different version of the Service if it wishes to continue to use the Service at higher data consumption levels. Comcast may also provide versions of the Service with different speed and data consumption limitations, among other characteristics, subject to applicable Business Services Agreements. Comcast’s determination of the data consumption for Service accounts is final.

I assure you, it is not "unlimited" - it seems to be fine, but there is sufficient wiggle room to the agreement you signed to kick you should they decide they want to.

The rep I spoke with said "no caps" too. It's a common misconception. I'm interested if you get flagged with multiple TB/mo, so do let us know!

I got a Motorola SB6120 modem installed.

I don't have DOSCIS 3.0 service, but it's working nonetheless.

It says I have 2 QAM256 bonded channels, 36 dB SNR, and 7 dBmV for for download. [3] QAM16 channels and 37 dBmV for power for upload. Are these values good?

Also DHCP is on, but there is option to turn it off; how do I turn it off? I already have a router.

Like I said, I probably won't be download multiple TBs of data, but I may be over 250GB maybe 3-4 times.

That should be fine, but as you can see by the AUP, they can decide at will what is 'too much', not unlike the residential side.
