1 edit | reply to Rayson Re: Rogers outage
The phones light up like crazy in the summer, my theory is that when air conditioners go in overdrive, slight brownouts cut power to the rogers equipment, but seldom residential homes.
When there is no "Official" outage the first tier agents are forced to "troubleshoot as normal", however they lose hundreds of dollars (in quarterly bonuses) if they spend too much time on the phones so you get what you got just now.

| reply to sbrook said by sbrook :But the point that I was trying to make is that generally speaking, if you happen to cut an arbitrary cable, be it Bell or Rogers, the chances are far higher that if you cut a Rogers cable, you'll create a scenario with far higher impact and loss of services than if you cut a Bell cable. It MAY happen that you cut off a whole town from phone or cable/phone/internet service with either and that I grant you. But given the sheer miles of phone cables of varying service levels, from 1 to hundreds of lines, the impact of any *arbitrary* cable cut compared with a cable cut is going to be less. Okay, Now that is a lot more clear than what your posting before.
And yes I am aware of the fact that ottawa is a giant cluster cluck of a mess. In fact if there is city due for a complete re-wiring job. Ottawa has to be on the top of the list. -- R.I.P Mom. |

| reply to joshb We can all make generalizations ... and they could all prove our points. Exceptions don't just apply to small towns or middle of nowhere. In fact I was referring to Greater Ottawa.

I want to get this out in the open right now. When I post something in these forums I making generalization about networks and network technologies.
There are always exceptions to the rules... If you live in a small town or in the middle or no-where yeah things are going to a little different. I am basing my statements on major metropolitan areas.
If you go digging hard enough you find problems with every single statement made on these forums... Come on lets not nit pick... -- R.I.P Mom. |

| reply to sbrook said by sbrook :If I chop a telco cable, which is significantly harder to cut I might add. I could cut 1 line or a few lines, or a few hundred lines. And what do I cut ? Just phone. No repeaters. Actually if you were right now to cut a fibre line of Bell you would most likely take out an RDAC (Stinger node). Which is a remote (Telco version of a cable repeater). And Telco's can and do feed multiple RDAC's with 1 fibre line going back to the Central office. 1 RDAC will do anywhere between 200 - 500 customers maybe more depending on how big a box they have there. Once your moved onto a Remote all your service go through that remote. Dial-tone and all...
The fact is the days of your house going straight back to the C/O are becoming long gone. Everyone is getting moved onto remotes. Look at all the boxes Bell is putting up every-where.

| reply to Rayson OK ... If I chop a fibre line, I cut all the subscribers in any and all upstream neighbourhoods. This can represent thousands of people. And they lose what ... cable TV, internet, telephone. Fibre lines are comparatively fragile ... I don't even have to chop through the line ... enough beating on the cable will cause fibre damage. All those fibre repeaters (after all a fibre line can only be so long) are also subject to failure.
If I chop a cable segment, it can cut typically between 1 and 100 people from cable TV, internet and phone.
If I chop a telco cable, which is significantly harder to cut I might add. I could cut 1 line or a few lines, or a few hundred lines. And what do I cut ? Just phone. No repeaters. |

| reply to drunkgoat said by drunkgoat :internet, tv and home phone were all down yesterday. That's what you get for putting all your eggs in one basket. Yes, and I only read news online (free & paid subscriptions) -- in order to save the environment, and I replaced my TV & radio with the web browser.
And I mainly use IM, Google talk (voice chat), and Skype for instance communications. The worst thing is that without access to the Internet, I could not get any work done!
Good that it is up and running!

| reply to sbrook said by sbrook :Did you call Rogers???? I did, and the initial answer was that the problem would be fixed in 30 minutes. Then I waited for a few more hours and called again, this time the CSR said that it was due to a fiber cut.
However, I "google news"ed Rogers+outage, and seems like no one knew about this problem! Am I the only one who suffered from this "fiber cut"??!! |
