Re: Must have tools

I'm using What's Up Gold to visualize my network and send notifications of radios that go down.

Active Wall (free) is a small simple program that I use to see who is using my bandwidth. auto discovers all CPE's, I then group them by which AP they are on. Am very pleased with this setup.

IP Scan, I set up a few excel tables with various IP addresses and it pings them. one list has all my back hauls, another my AP's, and a third has one customer from each AP. Pinging these gives me a good idea of the health of the network, and a good starting place to find the exact problem.

PRTG monitor, for key system devices (ping, bandwidth, signals,Upper level clients, etc.) And Cacti for our lower (read: less paying) clients.

Star-OS has it's own suite of utilities, so we use that for the in depth troubleshooting.

Mikrotik and Scrutinizer work well. Scrutinizer is free but only gives you 24 hours. If you buy you get unlimited. It handles netflow etc..

Has been very handy in identifying people who have been dominating resources etc.

You can use this on any mikrotik, AP, bridge or whatever.

Monitoring -- I can't say enough good things about Opsview. I was recently turned on to it by a forum member and it's worked out great for us (used nagios before). However, I don't use Mikrotik, so I'm not sure if The Dude has any special Mikrotik integration that would be superior to Opsview.

Graphing/Trending -- Opsview has graphing/trending but to make complex/customized stuff Cacti is great and really can't be beaten.

Netflow -- You can setup Mikrotik as a netflow probe, which allows you to use a netflow collector like Ntop to view all of your traffic graphically. If you need to do any sort of traffic accounting, netflow is also a great tool for this (although you may want to use a different collector than ntop)

I'm not too familiar with bulk updates of MT config's since I only used 1 to test it out, but you might want to see if there's any sort of bulk update tool (I'd imagine there is). We just installed a bulk config tool for another manufacturer's gear and it already saved us the time today that it took to install it.

Ditto on Dude, btest and other MT related stuff.

Just make sure to program the Dude manually, don't unleash it raw to scan your network or you'll be sorry.

Hi all, I am running a mikrotik network, and i am looking for tools to use that are good for monitoring and keeping track and quickly resolving issues in the network, as well as possibly identifying potential problems
Thank you for your input and info!
