| Michigan Outage There's a outage in Michigan right now in the Warren and Sterling Heights area.
My SS5100B's internet LED started blinking green somewhere between 11:00am and 12:15pm.
I called but as usual, they first try to blame your PC for the problem. All I wanted was a good dialup number!

Unfortunately AT&T's customer service is completely worthless, and a waste of time to even try to explain the problem your having. As you said they ALWAYS blame the customers computers rather then admit that they have a problem. It's kind of sad that you can get better service through a 3rd party website then you can get from their own customer service... I honestly compare it to talking to a brick... Neither one are going to do anything, but at least when you get pissed off at the brick you can at least throw the brick....
There is a good bunch of people on here that are willing to help... I'm glad that this forum is here to pick up the ball when AT&T keeps on dropping it....
I just wonder when they are going to realize that treating your customers like morons that don't know anything *ISN'T* a good way to keep customers...

Like this thread, because ONE person is down, it's obviously a MAJOR outage impacting two large cities in Michigan. Going out of sync can happen for a myrid of reasons, the vast majority of them not related to a large system outage.
There was someone a while back who was ranting and raving saying AT&T was throttling back connections when it was only him having the problem, with bad info and attitude about even suggesting it was his crap. Which it was.
Now, corollary to that, if someone is out of sync, FTS shouldn't be blaming the customers' PC. But what do you expect from Bangalore Bob? That doesn't negate the fact that the majority of issues do reside on the PC. I bet 75% of the time a tech is dispatched for sync no surf the tech is able to browse without issue using his laptop.
Now, if it is indeed an outage, they will know soon enough and begin repairs. Instead of sitting around, I would suggest doing the standard troubleshooting of no sync just to make sure that all I could do was done. Remove phones, remove filters, plug it in alone on the wiring, and go to the NID if that doesn't work. If it doesn't work after all that, then there is nothing else to do except wait for a tester to call because you ain't getting to the rest of the wiring.

2 edits | Well, I have had ATT DSL for a good many years and have been through this before. Lost DSL for four or five days one time too!
I have Cat 5 right from the NID where there is one filter only. All outages through the years have never been at my end.
I didn't call the outage MAJOR, you did! I was told that there was a outage in Sterling Heights and I'm 500 yards from that city. As I spoke to the tech, he said less outages were being showing up. Yes, they were working on it but he insisted on looking into my PC settings. Finally got him to give up and give me good dial up numbers as the one I had failed.
So five or six hours later, my SS5100B has all solid green LEDs and all is well again. Again it wasn't my problem
So what do you have to say about that Mr. KnowItAll???

12:15 connection dropped Called tech support While going thru the voice menus to reach tech support, the connection re-established.
Same thing happened the night before at 1:00 am. Same thing happened 2 nights before at 4:00 am.
It's weird, called tech support 4 times never did talk to a tech. Problem gets resolved just by calling.

| Re: Michigan Outage 10:15 am... just happened again!
My connection dropped. I call tech support. I get to the prompt where the voicemail thing asks: "I see your calling from xxx-xxxx, is that that the phone number you're calling about?"
I say "Yes" voicemail says "Hold on, I'll just look that up"
At that point the connect is restored and I'm fine. No need to talk to anyone so I hang up.
This exact sequence has happened 5 times now over last 3 days.
That's too weird. | |

| Re: Michigan Outage Happened about 4-5 times here other day
around 3:30-4p.m. in the afternoon when i got to broadband reports and noticed this thread start typing and it drops again, get ready to call, and it's restored, five minutes later blinking red again, and continuing to blink red--prepare to call again, connection restored, so i figure of all is fine, and don't bother calling
then it drops again, so that time i do dial, get to the prompt to say yes this is the phone number account is on, then modem goes solid green again, so i hang up. Very strange, also keep having 2wire say resolution successful every once in a while lately

Same thing, Line drops, I call tech support, as soon as I confirm my phone number with tech support voice mail, the modem connects and all is fine.

| hmmmmm..... it would be hard not to suspect the dish receiver based on the fact it's replaced.
I would say if it stays up well over 24 hours keep an eye on it and next time see if the receiver or anything with the filtering in that jack area might be loose. It's a long shot but something just doesn't sound right.
a rather long, long time ago, there used to be a fax machine out there that would transmit in the DSL frequency range (upstream range) and literally piss most DSL modems on that line off they were connected to. Only fix back then was a nid/sni splitter to make the filtering a bit more extreme.
If the dish receiver was doing anything of that nature it would make sense with what you saw, and why now it's clear. Unfortunately, it would be hard telling unless it does it again. Then again it might or might not.
I would say keep an eye and let me know. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. Koetting Ford, Granite City, illinois... YOU'RE FIRED!!

As for the Dish network recevier, being replaced again due to the issues it's having, should have the new replacement sometime later this week

I know today we had none, but i am keeping eye on it, and will let you know of any issues. As for the Dish network recevier, being replaced again due to the issues it's having, should have the new replacement sometime later this week It's definitely a possiblity, one thing you could do is fax something to say an efax number (registration is free and you get free receive of faxes). You could test it that way and see if the fax is interfering. If it is, the nid splitter will (as least in what I have seen in the past) the best way to go.
If it is the fax machine doing it, it should do it every time you send or receive a fax.
Since the 2wire is always studying the DSL, it could be picking it up and determining it as interference. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. Koetting Ford, Granite City, illinois... YOU'RE FIRED!!
