Re: TCP Retransmissions

IMHO, it surely becomes unacceptable when the application’s usability becomes unacceptable. Some applications respond differently to packet loss—for example, an interactive application like SSH might become nearly unusable with a small amount of loss, but even twice the amount of packet loss might go unnoticed when sending mail via SMTP.

He he he... No, we actually do have software to monitor and lert on queues when thresholds have been met. Slowness from the client is an ongoing issue and we can never track down the cause. Someone brought up the large number of TCP retransmissions however I do not know what is a 'normal' amount/percentage of retransmissions and what's excessive.

Does anyone know what percentage of TCP retransmissions is acceptable and after what percentage it would indicate a communications issue and impact performance of a network application such as email?

Thanks for any help.
