A/C question

My air conditioner was working fine until Monday (June 29th) after when the coolness quit working. I checked the A/C and saw the fan was not moving. Thinking the power was trip, I reset the breaker, but that didn't work. I reseated the fuse and still same problem. I went to Home Depot and bought new fuses and installed it. I turn on the A/C and heard a weird loud noise so I quickly unplugged the fuse. I waited about an hour or so, then tried again and what happened was the A/C would turn on but the fan would not move. Can someone tell me what that could be? I was thinking the compressor.

you need to get a pro to come look at it. could be a cap, could be compressor, could be the fan. don't take this the wrong way, but you do not know enough nor have proper tools to safely troubleshoot it.

Believe me, I wouldn't take the wrong way. I am mechanically inclined, but at the same time I KNOW what limitations. What I did is look for the reset button on the compression, which it didn't have one. I kinda figured I would have to call a pro (sigh).

If you try to spin the fan by hand does it spin freely? If so, take a look at the fan capacitor and see if it is misshapen on the top or bottom. A fan cap is cheap so if you are not sure just replace it. I would also take a close look at the contactor and see if the contacts are carboned up. Once again a contactor is cheap. If not sure, just replace it.

The fan operates independently of the compressor and should run even if the compressor is bad.
