Not to go off topic here but, the Penske cab-over truck that I rented several weeks back had cruise control (was surprised).

Mine didn't, however since it was limited to 75, it didnt matter, just had both feet resting on the pedal.

Your best bet is to pay to repair it. I had a flat in a rental once. When I took the car back they told me if they could patch it, it was OK. If not, I was on the hook for the cost of the tire.

Luckilly I was on company business so they would have paid, but I could almost bet they would charge an arm & leg for a truly busted tire.

Why? All of the other car rental companies around here give unlimited mileage, all around the same price, assuming you choose the same class of car.

To the poster above...I do not want a moving truck, dont need that much space nor do I want to pay for the gas down there and back for such a big vehicle. A small passenger car is all I really need since it is two people and some baggage.

I wouldnt have a problem renting from someone else...but I have $400 in gift certificates I need to use. The thing I need to do is go by the local franchise next week and talk to them. See what they have for options.

Out Of Area Rules
The other poster was right if you violate the contract, you are responsible for getting the car back to them in the condition you got it. Daily rental charges apply even while being repaired. If you total it, you just bought it. And, no, your insurance won't cover it since you broke a contract.

If you're smart, just ask the local office. Tell them what you need. They'll tell you yes or no. Budget, more expensive, might be better. I could drive them anywhere because I got unlimited miles. My AMEX covered the insurance.

GPS? I wouldn't doubt it.

Why not just fly? Cheaper in the long run. Use Priceline. I got a $350 a night room in Orlando for $99 with them.

I've submitted Amex damage claims twice in the past ten years for rental cars (both parking lot scrape types) and my involvement consisted of (a) a phone call, (b) mailing in the paperwork to Amex, and (c) getting a letter 2 months later saying it was all taken care of.

You are assuming that they tried to charge AMEX for loss of use. They might not have since AMEX is a pretty big account to lose.

I've found that Avis is cheaper than Enterprise. Enterprise's scam is they rate the cars differently. What they call a mid-size, other companies call a compact. So when you compare rates, you're getting a smaller car than you think.

Funny... I was renting an intermediate, which should have been something like a G5, Corolla, or Cobalt. Instead, they gave me a Dodge Caliber, which was much bigger (and a much bigger gas-sucker) than I was expecting.

Though, considering that the Enterprise I did rent from rents an office inside a Ford dealership, I was surprised that there weren't more Fords on the lot for them.

Not really. A Connecticut case said the fees associated with the GPS tracking were excessive AND it was not properly disclosed on the contract. A similar California case stated the same thing about proper disclosure.

I would look for a one way special to say Miami, and then rent another one way special back home.
Usually one ways are only available at airports. You may be in luck and they may be available, or not. It can be hit or miss.
Its not as easy to find a one way car as it is renting a penske.
I just came back from moving a friend down to Miami and I love driving so, so even doing the trip in a Penske truck was fine. Take your time if you have it though and enjoy the trip more. I was able to do it in 2 days with about 12 hours per day driving, but that was out of necesscity and not enjoyment.

(PS, I use Enterprise 2x a year. I am allowed to take it from PA to NY State (near Canada), All of NE. But yes, not west of Mississipi. I did ask if I had could go to Canada for a day and it was provisioned)

A quick map check shows about 1500 miles from Maine to Florida. That's 500 over your 1000 free weekly allotment (per the second quote). From that wording, it would seem it's OK to go outside the listed states, you're just limited to 1000 miles a week.

How long you gonna be in Florida?

Two weeks gives you 2000 miles. Three week gives you 3000. Stay a month and you're well under the limit ;-)

I would call and ask (and of course get it in writing during the rental) if you can do 3000 miles in whatever time period. If they're not willing, ask how much extra they'll charge for that to be allowed. Offer maybe an extra $100?

Finally...that's a longass drive. Careful, take your time, and good luck!

Those are issued to the driver, not the car. Parking ticket? Don't get one in a rental they will rape you with fees.

I don't know what else to expect if you total a $30,000 car and don't have valid insurance to cover it.
