Re: Astraweb Special - $96/Year - Unlimited - $8 month

Just as a talking point in regards to pre-paying for a year...Would most feel comfortable paying that far in advance?

I've spent a lot of time in the VoIP forums on here, over the years, and have seen people get burned when they prepay for such a long time in advance.

In fact, I think we have only ever had 2 people ask about pre-paying for a year. Granted, Astraweb has been around a lot longer than us, so that may ease some concerns for folks paying so far in advance with them.

If I were to go back to unlimited usenet (from block account), for this price I would seriously consider prepay. AstraWeb has been around for awhile now, they are not a reseller. They own their own stuff.

But I've also read posts from users about this new AstraWeb deal. Given the limited time of the offer, they can't come up with the money right away. They expressed interest but are not able to come up with the money in the limited time frame. I think there is a good chance many people can't/wont' come up with all the money upfront, given the economic climate.

I can understand users not wanting to commit to a year. Either for money reasons (lump sum) or concern if the usenet provider services degrades/problems start. Or should an even better deal appear.

That is also a good point. Two other factors to consider.

- The recent usenet.com ruling..Could it further change the landscape of usenet as we all know it today? Keep in mind, I do not know anymore than anyone else in regards to the case...so I think it is a valid question to at least ponder.

- The "surprise" of a re-bill of $100 next year at this time may provide a small surprise to some customers who completely forgot...Happens more than you think, with just simple 3 month accounts.

Yea no thanks on this one. I would rater pay 11 and have the freedom to know I can switch whenever I want (without paying more anyway) Newsgroup services are way to volatile to be on board for that long. What may be a great service now may be terrible in 6 months. Not to mention like what Swintec brought up with the usenet.com ruling. Those assholes opened up the door with the way they advertised their service, now I can almost guarantee its going to be used against every other provider.

While I see the logic in the above statements, $96 is not going to drive me to the poorhouse.
Their service has been very good so far.
Im going with the odds that they wont close up shop tomorrow.
And after about 8 or 9 DL's, I'll be ahead of the game anyway.
Just my 2 cent opinion.

This is a great deal from Astraweb. But I'm also one that won't prepay for a year. After either 60 or 90 days most credit card companies won't let you do a chargeback in case something happens with the service. Since Astraweb has been around since 04 or 05, I believe, I dont think anything will go wrong but sh*t happens.
