I was cleaning out an old drawer and found this bit from before Cablevision bought it.

Didn't know any cable company in the past offered FM radio through cable in the NY metro area. Heard of it from other areas/providers but not here.

Brookhaven Cable TV, which was later TCI of Brookhaven, and now Cablevision of Brookhaven offered FM reception for free up until they started offering the DMX service..

I think many cable companies did this. In the old days before there were stereo TVs, they also simulcasted the premium movie channels in stereo on FM.

Many did -- this was the first time I ever heard of one charging for it though.. $2.50 with a basic cable subscription... $22.30 without?!

I really miss DMX. That was an awesome service. The remote had that cool little display with title/artist/album info.

LOL.. I remember the "remote" box I had (late-'70s-early '80s) was a 2-piece deal with a "slider" channel selector connected by a long wire to the cable box itself. I'm pretty sure it was UA Columbia back then in Northern NJ.

[EDIT] Here is an actual UACC "Community Bulletin Board" from 1982:

[EDIT] February 27th in 1982 was on a Saturday, so this can't be 1982... I guess it's somewhere in the '80s. LOL

[EDIT 2] I'm guessing it's 1980.

[EDIT 3] Since the Weather Channel started in 1982, this must be 1985.

the old boxes with wired remotes were Jerrold JRX-3 and yes with the 12 buttons and slider on the left side. Slides between 3 channel groups: Channel 2-13, A-L, M-W

yes in those days channels above 13 were letters

Before cable was available, we had a UHF type antenna on the roof for Wometco Home Theater.

Here are some pics of old boxes:

WOW This is just scary stuff. I was born in 1986 so all this stuff you guys are talking about is freaking me out LOL. Makes me wonder how things will look like in 2029. I will only be 43 years old. Jesus I am getting old.

Still selling them for cheap on that site.

Jerrold Electronics was bought by General Instrument, which was in turn bought by Motorola...alot has changed in that time. I still remembering having the black Jerrold/General Instrument boxes only 10 years ago and further back. Also remember a few people I knew how easy it was to descramble premium channels along with free PPV with those boxes as well.

I had that woodgrain looking Jerrold box.. The best was having to fine tune the stations with the knob on the right

You could "fine tune" scrambled porn to the point it was kind of watchable.

LOL! When I was a kid, I lived in an area that was serviced by Suburban Cablevision (now Comcast). We had those Jerrold boxes too. You used to be able to sort of see the softcore stuff if you push the 2, 4, and 7 buttons all at the same time, and roll the wheel on the right all the way to the top. Ahh, the good old days!!
