ok, so they use that empty channel for sweeping...in a system here the sweep generator is on a regular channel, as there is no empty space for it....they have to go turn it on/off and a hub site when they want to sweep...

Is it a CW carrier (Continuous Wave), or digitally modulated 64QAM / 256QAM ? Obviously it's not NTSC Analog as all you see is snow.

continuous wave as my tv does not detect a digital signal. when i type 122-1 it does not even go to 122-1 it just stays on the current channel.

what is wierd is I also have:
94 test 256qam blank carrier
100 test 256qam blank carrier
121 test 256qam blank carrier
125 test 256qam blank carrier

it used to be on channel 94 when my cable system was 750MHz then it was moved to 116 then where it is today.

So now I'm curious what does the test do (what function does it serve) for the cable company?

it does exactly as it sounds..tracks noise...say there is noise on the line, when techs think they fixed it they can tune to that channel to see if noise is gone. fixing = repairing damaged cables, disconnecting a noisy drop to a house, replacing taps, etc.
