Re: FiOS Unadvertised Symmetrical Plan 25/25

One little glitch with the upgraded Fios internet speeds. The installation program is incorrectly telling Verizon techs that virtually all customers are getting 25/25 speeds when in fact they are getting 25/15. 25/25 would be additional $ or a free upgrade. If you are a customer and go to "my account" on the Verizon website you will see the speeds you are paying for with your plan.

I install fios and no one told us that speeds would be upped to 25/25. Originally we were told speeds would be boosted to 25/15 from 20/5. Our paperwork is just starting to reflect new speeds. Competition is a great thing.

hey, just thought I would confirm for anyone wondering that FiOS didn't actually get rid of the symmetrical plan with this recent boost in speeds. I previously had 20/20, but I'm now receiving 25/25, which is just wonderful.
I signed for 25/15, but at first it was all over the place, but has been settling down to 25/25. I'm digging the fluffy goodness.

Oops, I missed the combined "21" -- thought the OP was saying they weren't achieving the combined "50"... my bad!

Not sure what you're getting at. If I were paying for 25 down and 15 up, but could never get both at the same time, I'd be concerned, yes, since it implies there is something odd going on (some sort of shaping, maybe?)

So, he's signed up for the 25/15 plan, gets 25 up and 25 down separately but only gets ~40 (25+15!) when doing both concurrently? I don't see a problem with that

I don't read it that way. He says: "actual concurrent transfer is a combined throughput of 25 instead of 40+." I take that to mean maxed out one way and trying to push 15 or so the other way, and not seeing that, and that's a valid concern, IMO.

Is there a benchmark that would test bi-directional transfer? because with 25/15, I get 24/21 on speakeasy, but actual concurrent transfer is a combined throughput of 25 instead of 40+.
The speeds are 25/25, meaning the downstream bandwidth available is 25 Mbps, and the upstream bndwidth available. A certain part of the opposite direction is required for ACKs, true, so all things being equal you might see 24 Mbps if you were simultaneously uploading and downloading.

From your statement, it sounds like you were expecting ~50 Mbps (2x25 Mbps) if you weren't uploading anything. It doesn't work that way.

No, if you were having delayed acks, you would be seeing the throughput in the other direction suffer. Think about this for a minute: you are using 10mb downstream and nothing (significant) upstream. If you tried to push 15mb upstream, the acks for that traffic (which consume down bandwidth) would certainly not add up to 10mb more.

umm, isn't this the way it's supposed to work? the speeds are not concurrent speeds, you need to account for overhead (acks and whatnot)

If you using speakeasy for speed test its having problems use speedtest.net it works fine for me with a full 34/34mb speed.

Something vewy scwewy is going on here. From Friday night 6/26, my download speed dropped to kbps (yes, about that of a 300 baud modem) and upload speed flat topped at 2500. I have 20/5 which has always been full speed. No results until 8AM Monday, but now download speeds vary from 5-8M, never the full 20. Sometimes way less. And upload tops out at 3200 or so. While seemingly unrelated, my contact at FiOS was telling my wife they were also working on the tiling and audio dropouts across many of the channels, he had called to ask us to ask if we still saw the problem. four calls to Internet tech support resulted in four answers:

1) No one else is having a problem, please reboot, etc etc

2) Hmm, yes you have a problem, a tech will be at your house by 1700 on Sunday

3) Tech calls at 1630 - "I'm not coming out, it seems to be a problem in your neighborhood. (!)

4) 2200 Sunday - "Well, most of the city of Coppell is affected, we are working on it".

Very atypical of FiOS's tech support in my experience.

This is really intriguing, I am starting to experience the same exact thing. I'm on 20/20 for several months, testing my speeds several times a week and always (and I really mean ALWAYS) getting a full 20mb down / 20mb up on my speed tests. Now, my upload speeds all over the place, but usually they average about 15mb. Download speed is fine. Wonder what is going on... I will be watching this thread.

Odd. I have/had the 20/20, which seems to have dropped to 20/15 last week.
