Poor voice quality of distant caller

RE: CallVantage using AT&T 2Wire 2701HG-B modem/router

Using AT&T DSL broadband with 6Meg down and 0.8 up.
Also am using Skype softphone and Vonage (VDV21-VD modem/router).

Voice quality of Skype and Vonage is excellent. However, after using CallVantage since January of 2008 with great success and great up/down voice quality, three weeks ago the received-audio from distant caller began to clip and warble 80% of time. Distant callers say my transmitted voice quality is marginal. There were no system changes or upgrades performed, nor new programs installed previous to voice quality deterioration. Call quality is good when a call is initiated and then deteriorates soon thereafter whether call is received or I initiate.

AT&T Tier-2 support and I agree that it is a PC processor/memory resource issue probably caused by another actively-running interfering program. However, after terminating other non-essential programs, problem remains. I increased paging-file memory to 4Gig to no avail. Also, whether processor is running at 4% or 95%, warbling/clipping remains.

System is XP Pro SP3; Athlon 64 CPU; 500Gig HDD and 2Gig RAM. No games installed.

Any ideas on interfering program and/or solution?
