Spurred by the Mono thread to bail out on Ubuntu/Debian-based distros, and Gnome.

My first Fedora+KDE desktop!

KDE 4.3RC1 + Fedora 11

I LIKE IT!

Still tweaking though. Just relearning how to do things the KDE way. It has been a while since I've touched KDE, and Yum is great.

Sound and wireless work on mint otob, one must just

sudo rmmod b43
sudo rmmod ssb
sudo modprobe wl

wait a minute for the little gui thingy to search for networks, then connect.

Unlike ubuntu live cd, sound words otob, but why I neither know nor care.

Dear Friends,

Back from a real OS on a real hdd, notice the "regular gnome" on kakalaky's desktop, now mine, on my real pc -

leaving aside the car background, I thought I had fairly intelligent ergonomics, but see that the ice or flux type thing in the bottom with huge icons is more intuitive, although there was a reason why I set some things on the side and others on the top at one point.

Is my destop really way too cluttered? The Mint menus, by the way, are one step up from windows 95, so I am not sure why the developers spent time creating a menu where one has to know where things are visually, as it took me a moment or two to find the terminal app, which is generally the first thing one needs. I am beginning to think my desktop looks like gnome from 2000 or so.

Best,
M

The "regular gnome" is actually gnome, compiz and gnome do with the docky theme. I found docky to be a great way of launching aps. I can just click when my hand is on the mouse or use the regular gnome do keyboard launching when it's not. The only reason I even use compiz anymore is for docky.

As for your desktop being too cluttered, If it works for you then keep using it.

Well, I learned that I still don't like RPMS, the way Red Hat does things as far as file location and how servers don't seem to even have good defaults. Mysql and Apache would not run after fresh install. The repositories available are not as good as debian/ubuntu repos.

So the distro is back to Ubuntu, but this time because of the KDE trail with Fedora, I'm going to stick with KDE 4.3.

I don't need Gnome AND compiz, when KDE does it ALL!
Used Gnome for 7+years, and I think I'm hooked on KDE4.3RC1. I liked the idea of KDE4, but it was a rough debut. But with KDE4.3 RC1 still has bugs, but a lot of controls to tweak the eye candy, and the eye candy is luscious.

The more I play around with Cairo Dock the more I like it and it seems lighter weight than AWN. I also like how it can be put anywhere on your desktop and completely hidden when not needed.

I need a detailed system monitor for KDE to replace Gkrellm. I never liked the look of Conky. The KDE widget sys. mon. plasmoids look like toys and not REAL monitors. I have NO text readout for network traffic, and LVM hard disk traffic. What is up with that?
