Pre-sign up questions

Hi all, I am currently in the process of leaving my ISP(Bell) and I'm looking for a new provider. I live in Burlington around the Palmer Rd area, and I'm thinking of going with Cogeco. I know Cogeco has extremely low bandwidth caps, but seeing as it's the only real option in my area I don't have a choice. Here are a couple of questions I have before signing up.

1) On average what is Cogecos typical latency to New York and Chicago? I use a lot of latency sensitive applications (VoIP, Gaming, Etc.)

2) How bad is the congestion in my area during peek hours? (hopefully someone who works at Cogeco or someone in the same area as me can answer this)

Thanks in advance.

if gaming is your main concern than cogeco is probably a good isp choice. if downloading is more your concern than you might want to look elsewhere.

you should post this same question in the Canadian Broadband forum you'll get answers from lots of people on various isps.

Yes, gaming is one of my main concerns. As for posting on the Canadian Broadband forums, Cogeco and Bell are the only two ISPs in my area, that is why I posted here.

Thanks for the reply.

Hello, Andrew! You came to the right place for your Cogeco questions.

Why not fire off a few servers and we can check the latency for you? So far I have yet to see a competitor in my are with lower latency to all the game servers I play on. I was considering a switch from my Cogeco Business package to Cogeco light for gaming + Teksavvy for downloading, and after an argument with a savvy Teksavvy friend (they do seem to attract an argumentative clientele) we compared latencies and Cogeco was always a little bit lower. Some Toronto servers were considerably lower.

I can't comment on Bell but I'd be surprised if they were faster. That and their support is terrible.

Yeah Bells tech support is awful. Anyways here are some IPs.

*Starts Firing *

69.65.3.27 (Chicago)
8.9.9.105 (Chicago)
8.2.121.204 (New york)

If you could run a trace route on these that'd be great.

there are plenty of dsl options in your area (or should be) that can offer much better bandwidth cap options than bell can offer. though they are leasing bell equipment to do so.

Oh wait, didn't you know Tek Savvy's 200GB plan uses peer1 peering for excellent latency?
