Avast Was Unable To Scan These Files

I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2, 64 bit, and am pretty careful which websites I go to. I use Chrome most of the time, and Firefox 3.5 with NoScript for questionable sites. Yesterday, I decided to run some scans. Spybot picked up a bunch of Spyware which I got rid of. I ran SUPERAntispyware, and it found a Trojan in a Temp file which I got rid of. I then ran a thorough virus scan using Avast 4.8 Home Edition, and it found no infections, however, it posted a log of items which it said it was unable to scan (see attached). The M: directory is an external hard drive using Memeo as a real-time backup. What could the log mean? Thanks.

Re: Avast Was Unable To Scan These Files

As the result portion of the log says "Unable to scan: Archive is password protected". Avast doesn't know the password so it will not be able to open it to be scanned. Programs such as Spybot do this to protect itself. It is nothing to worry about.

From the Avast Site FAQ

Q: When the file scanning is finished, avast! comes up with a number of files listed as "unable to scan", even though I have used a thorough scan. Should I be concerned?
A: Some files are permanently locked by the system or they are in password-protected archives. These files cannot be scanned. It is normal and you don´t have to be worried about that.

There are always files that all AV's cannot scan. If they don't report that they can't, you're not getting a complete scanning report...

If that Wd_backup is part of your backup strategy exclude it from scanning

Re: Avast Was Unable To Scan These Files

Thanks everyone.....Only reason I asked is because I've run many scans with Avast and never had a log come up telling me that it was unable to scan any files.

Cudni....if my external drive is there for an everyday backup, shouldn't I scan it?

Re: Avast Was Unable To Scan These Files

I wouldn't as anything going to it should be coming from your main drive which is already being checked
