Re: DSL down in NY and CA

It's back up now. Since I'm the only one posting about this, I wonder if this was really a wide area problem like the tech support rep said.

Hard to say, but I would have expected a few other posts so it may have been a very limited area.

Glad to hear it is back working.

Thanks Doc. Nothing on Earthlink's network status page either, yet I was immediately told they were experiencing problems in CA and NY.

I have the router back on and am typing this from my w2k PC and I can do my AVG updates now. I moved on from my 233MMX W95 OSR2 PC to this PIII about a year and a half ago.

I had ongoing random disconnects in the same time period and had to fight with ELNK. They seemed to have stabilized it finally after ~three weeks of random disconnects. I too was told that there was some work going on at the CO level.
Had to laugh sometimes at the different stories that I got. They told me my router was causing the problem till I informed them it was a direct connect of one PC to the modem. Then they said the modem was bad and that they couldn't do anything more or send a tech person out to the CO-house till I replaced the modem. I'm no longer under a contract so they offered to waive the cost of a new modem if I would pay shipping and handling of a new modem (Zyxell-P-660 ELNK) to replace my Zyxell-P-660 ELNK. all for the low low price of 26.95 shipped 2nd day air. They first offered an "overnight air" replacement for 78.95 which I nearly choked on. This topic came about after one of ELNK's agents said that my modem was an old modem and "should" have been replaced long ago with new technology. Long story short, I'm back using my router and my modem and everything is stable again(methinks a bit better performance as well). "Something" was going on with ELNK and COVAD at the CO level but I could not get ANY information on what was wrong, what they did to fix it etc. I do know that I received multiple callbacks form support to find out if what they did was still working! First time in "many" years that a 2nd or 3rd tier rep called me back.

I still hook up my original 5660 Modem/Router that I received in January 2000 and it works beautifully on my 6.0/768 line with perfect sync. Until EL goes ADSL2 or ADSL2+ with their product, the original Modems will continue to work fine. Only the newer P660R series are ADSL2+ ready and they will work fine on older line using G.DMT or ANSI T1.413 being fully backward compatible..
