[ Homephone] 4 $ a minute for reverse charges

There is a new compagnie in Montreal that uses Bell phone booths. They charge 4$ a minute when you call reverse charge, my problem is when you accept the charges , no one tells you how much your paying.

The caller has to know or choose an option in the menu that will inform you how much your paying. Otherwise your call goes trought an when you receive your Bill , nice surprise.
I called my home phone provider (Videotron) nothing can be done since they are charge by Triton Global. I called Triton Global , they told me that the caller should be intelligent enough to know how to use the service. I called the CRTC and this is not a Company that is manage by the federal goverment but the guy took my name and phone number for them to call me back (fat chance) and the guy told me also that they can charge me anything they want since it is not regulated. My god lets open a phone compagnie and charge people 100$ a minute and the user has no choice to pay. I just love our capitalist world
So if you see a Global Triton phone booth change.

Hmm ok but there is an option not to use it correct? Generally if you don't know the charges you wouldn't use a service like that.

Re: [ Homephone] 4 $ a minute for reverse charges

If you read that again, you'll realize what's going on ...

1) Anyone calling you collect may not realize that this is NOT a Bell call box without looking closely

2) Anyone calling you collect may not realize that if the person he's calling accepts that person is going to get dinged at $4 per minute

3) In accepting a call, the person receiving the call hasn't a clue that it's from a 3rd party callbox and is being charged at $4 per minute.

If you are in a situation that you have to make a collect call, generally it's got to be an urgent matter and if there aren't many call boxes around, you're relieved you've found a phone at all, never mind if it's a Bell one! In some areas you won't find a Bell phonebox at all! So, you can't blame the caller for not necessarily realizing.

Next the per minute charge is absurd, since the cost of the call is the cost of the call plus a handling fee. In this case, for a 1 min local call it's a 50c call plus a $3.50 handling fee. A 10 minute local call would be a 50c call plus a $39.50 handling fee!!! This is gouging beyond belief!

I would go to the Quebec Consumer Protection people too ... they seem to have stronger protection laws than many provinces ... »www.opc.gouv.qc.ca/

high collect call charges from alternate provider

I think something is a bit unclear here: if a collect call is being made, it may be being made from a phone booth that isn't Bell's, or is being made through an alternate LD/operator provider via a Bell phone (I'm not sure if an alternate operator can be reached from a Bell payphone or not, as I always get a Bell operator when I dial 0 on one of their phones).

There is competition in the payphone market, and the ones that aren't Bell can sometimes be made to look pretty similar. The actual phone set inside the booth looks different from the usual Bell phones (I think the ones with the screens are called Millenium?), but the outside is often a while background with a blue handset on it and no wording as to who it belongs to. Canada Payphone Corp, which was purchased by Globalive (soon to be competitor in wireless industry, and owner of Yak) in 2004, is an example of an alternate payphone company.

After having a look at the Triton Global website, they do provide 0+ operator services so it may be they are the company supplying that to an alternate payphone provider.

Re: high collect call charges from alternate provider

Per their web site:

"Who is TGBSI, Inc.?
TGBSI provides billing services primarily for communications companies. TGBSI neither sets the rates of the service charges that appear on an end-user bill, nor provide services to the end-user.

What is TGBSI’s function?
TGBSI’s primary function is to process billing transactions to either Local Telephone Companies or its direct billing platform. It then reconciles payments from these entities and handle’s any inquiries that arise as a result of the bill statements."

They sound like a factoring company (ie. a company who buys accounts receivables from the actual company for a %).

Re: high collect call charges from alternate provider

Yup they aren't the phone provider ... they're basically a "call centre" for operator calls or operator intercepted calls like 0+ calls.

Re: high collect call charges from alternate provider

Sounds like you got scammed.

In addition to the contact sbrook gave you above, I would also contact the Quebec Consumers Union who may also be able to help.

The Quebec Consumers Union has some experience with Telus, Rogers and Bell playing dumb and saying they know nothing about your bills. Should be the same with videotron.

Hope you fight.

They are also billing for 1900 porn scammers, heh:
