I lived in Minnesota and never use chains CalTrans does indeed use sand....There are huge piles up at Oak Hills in the CalTrans yard in between the north and south lanes of the 15 that rises from 2900 feet to 4700 feet in less than 3 miles, and on the 5 just to the north of Lake Castaic.
The 10 freeway gets snow but usually just flurries that melt off quickly so Sand is not kept out there. The sand you do see is for UP trains. They use it to spread on the tracks for more traction through the 10 and also the 15.

1 edit | They use sand anywhere in CA that gets ice or snow, Caltrans puts it down here during the winter on snowy and icy spots, as do the railroads as ghost mentioned. The railroads don't just use it in the winter though, it's dropped (by nozzels located behind the wheels, eacn locomotive carries it's own load of sand) to gain traction at any time of year.

What you should be doing is finding (really soon) a late 60s or early 70s V8 Camaro or Mustang and making a father/son project out of fixing it up for him. He can do extra chores for spiffy parts. If he has his own blood sweat and tears into it he'll appreciate it more. That's an excellent suggestion. We do have this 2002 Ford diesel pickup and we did brew up bio diesel as a project. I got the truck for a song and to drive on the plot of rocks, but it's one of those rigs with the 25' lift kit where you need a grappling hook to get into it. The only thing that its missing is gun racks and long horns on the grille. It couldn't be more safe to drive, and couldn't be more unsafe for anything that it may come into contact with. With my kid driving, I have to consider the public welfare.

He would only be able to "borrow" the keys as needed I think. Perhaps we can enter into an agreement where he can rent it from me Month to Month; he pays X$ at the beginning of each Month and he has X days of driving privileges. I dunno. That's probably over thinking the whole thing. At least I have a short time to mull it all over. |

| My strong preference would be to have him build one he could call his own based on sweat equity. One of my neighbors did that with all three of his back in St. Louis.
A flatbed shows up with a dilapidated '65 Mustang that looked like it had been used in a scene from the movie where NYC is converted into a prison (an idea that needs revisiting, but that's another thread). I was able to watch the process of a complete frame-up restore, with he and his daughter doing almost all of the work. He out-tasked powder-coating the frame, but did nearly everything else himself including sewing the upholstery.
When it was done, you'd swear that thing had just rolled out of the showroom and the daughter learned more about what it takes to build and maintain a car than most UAW members. Cherry red, 289 and chrome so shiny you could shave in it.
I lack the resources, space and much of the skills to take something like that on. Even if I did, the oldest is not interested or adept at such projects. It would be right up my youngest's alley, though, and we've talked about a scaled-back project if he doesn't inherit the Scion. Another variable in #2 son's driving future is the increase in the driving age. Stupid morons in Sacramento. I wonder if I could get a PO box in NV for a couple of years? |

1 edit | I just looked up that whole age restriction thing. Although I did see some "recommendations" from some acronym'd safety board suggesting the age requirement be raised to 18 in the Sunshine State, that change will likely never see the light of day...so to speak.

| I was told (by a lawyer, no less) that the net effect of that wording means that you can't drive until you're 18. No more provisional license, which is what you now have from 16-18.
I haven't done the homework to know if she was right or if there's some other statute floating around regarding it. If I'm wrong, I'll be happy for my youngest son, but I will not retract my comment about the legislators.

I was told that the .02 threshold gives a little leeway for things like mouthwash. I dunno.
Because of my divorce and a very smart attorney who warned me NEVER to enter into any monetary entanglements with my ex-wife, my kids didn't get their licences until they were 18. (Both parents must sign off on a minor's DL and both assume FULL RESPONSIBILITY regardless of who has custody at the time.)
They survived. The first was the hardest to deal with, but as each one reached the magic age of 15 1/2, they began to realize that a license was out of the question.
For each one I promised that I would match the first $2K going to the purchase of a vehicle, but insurance was up to them. We made a big deal of opening a joint savings account on birthday 18 and I put the money in the account. We called it the "escrow account". Amazingly they all managed to save at least the max.
I like the idea of "renting" as an alternative. but it does chaff my hide when a lot of these kids get if not new, 1 or 2 year old cars on their 16th. Talking about creating a sense of entitlement! I thought I was lucky getting my parents to cosign for $600 for a Honda 125!

| One of my sons received an older, cast off MBZ from his late grandfather's estate. Nice car, but it was high mileage and definitely an old man's car. Tough shit, it was free.
It needed a tune-up, and I told him he had two choices: pay for a shop to do it for him with his own money ($$$$) or do it himself under my occasional supervision. Of course, I knew something he didn't know... 3 of the plugs were whores to R&R.
Actually, I knew another thing he didn't know... I wasn't going to help him. He needed a lesson in patience and sticking to a task and seeing it through. He came stomping into the house in frustration quite a few times, because HE knew that I'D done the job a few times in the past, and that I had it down to a science, and why couldn't I just come out there and whip the last two plugs out for him?
I told him he was going to do the whole job and get that thing running or he could ride the bus to school with the froshies and sophies. That did it. Mr. Cool Homie don't play dat.
When your kids hate you, you're doing a good job.
