Re: Credit card processing company knocked out by fire.

lol. reminds me of when I used to work for the Death Star. They spent millions on a backup data center - only to realize the consultant(!) who designed the system was clueless and while trying to minimize costs (looks good on paper) downsized the DR site so much that it could not possibly withstand production traffic.

Funny thing is - we even told them that while they were planning.. of course nobody listened. Bottom line: several million dollars in the trash - and a DR site that fails on an actual disaster...

Not surprised.

I have a relative who is an ATT engineer. I don't think that things have changed that much.

If anything, the new SBC managers that now run ATT score even higher on the DBCS (Dilbert's Boss Clueless Scale).

My relative used to work for the original Bell Labs in Holmdel, pre-breakup. And Bell Labs could never get its fire alarm system to work properly. Don't get me wrong, Bell Labs was a great organization, but still.....

And:

Was talking to a longtime Verizon employee recently and I commented that a big local hospital had just switched all its phones to a CLEC. She commented, "Oh, Verizon doesn't care about phones anymore. That's why they are selling so much off. They only care about Fios and wireless...."

Not a surprise.....

To all the POTS fans: Unfortunately, even the POTS people no longer care about POTS.

That's a given. POTS is a dying business as a mass consumer product. It'll still be there for businesses and such - but even that is going to shift massively towards VoIP (whether independent or cable'd). I guess they (Verizon) finally accepted the fact that POTS has no future and is moving on. Not a bad choice business-wise.

It's also interesting that they ditched the VoIP market too. I guess they figure bundled phone with Fios is going to sell better and have less competition than "regular" VoIP.
