It's been that way on this issue for years. That's how the political partisans on each side contribute to the government gathering more and more information on people --- by being silent or defending it when it's "their" side doing it. And frankly most of them don't give a shit about the surveillance, they care first and foremost about advancing "their" side.

Seriously. It's little more than pseudo-patriotism pong. It's certainly not helped by the cable networks. I think keeping people bickering certainly helps grease the rails for policy that's not in most human beings' best interest.

And therein the problem lies. You forget the third leg of the stool which is the Media that heavily profits from the spitting contests while perpetuating the ignorance that keeps it alive.
