The real reason why monitors are going the 1920x1080 route is because of hdmi and 1080 being the broadcast/bluray standard. I beg to differ. They are a bit more expensive from when I was looking on Newegg when I bought mine. I figured I might as well go full resolution. Plus the 2ms response time is damn good, which I didn't see on ANY of the "name brand" lcds.
