There are a slew of variables which will affect your data transfer speed from other parts of the Internet. WRT speed test sites, some of the variables are limitations inherent in the JS, or Flash implementations of the tests.
In general the most accurate speed test is the download speed reported by the client for the current file you are downloading from any given source. Even then you have to take into account routing and their server upload capacity (you can't download any faster than they can upload; unless they are able to upload faster than your download speed, they might be the bottleneck). -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| reply to N4ZX If you use at&t's test, you are testing from you to the edge of the at&t network, which would be the only part that at&t can fix if you did have a speed issue. You can use other test sites, but you are adding portions of the internet outside of the at&t network that can affect your speed and can not be fixed by at&t if you have issues. If I am concerned about speed from at&t then I would use their test. -- GUN CONTROL: using both hands |

| reply to N4ZX Believe the fastest one. There are lots of reasons that speed tests can show slower speeds than your line is actually running. Internet congestion, overloaded speed server, etc. But if you're seeing 6.0+ consistently at ANY site, then your line is good. |

| I am confused about speed tests and hope some folks here can tell me if BS/AT&T is accurate. I have Xtreme 6.0. I test at Speedtest.net in Greensboro, NC and Speakeasy.net in Atlanta and I see 6.0+ down. I go to speed.fastaccess.com and helpme.att.net and I see between 3.4 and 4.2 down. The technician comes to the house and he checks my line and stats. He says I have good connection details and am showing 6.0+. AT&T online support said I should be using their speed test. Service technician prefers speedtest.net. As an interesting aside to this, speed.fastaccess.net for me was consistently up at 6.0+ until a few weeks ago. What should I believe? |
