Once the Modem is registered, connecting a router would not change your viewable registered Modem MAC. If you can't get online after connecting a router, it's not a Comcast issue, but rather your network issue.

Changing your router will change the default MAC address, so we have to use the cloned MAC address [or just record the old one and input it into the new router].

For security, change the router default password, and disable remote administration if that is an option.
For wireless, use WPA security, it's more robust than WEP. You really don't want everyone within range of your signal to be able to connect using your internet.
If you're not using the wireless radio, turn it off, you can still use the router LAN/WAN wired.

To do this on a normal modem, just unplug it for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. On an eMTA hit the reset/restart button on the back (this will cut off the phones in the home for a few minutes).
