Over the last few weeks, DNS service has started to "time out" more and more frequently, causing browser "not found" errors for those addresses and web pages not cached. The normal speed tests for the same period show increased speeds more often than not, and of all things about 40% packet "out of order" test results. »miranda.ctd.anl.gov was used for detailed testing multiple times. The packet "out of order" % increased with the increase in tested speeds.
Cable line levels and noise ratios well within normal limits for my drop, and no problems noticed with CATV or HDTV channels. |

1 edit | reply to chuckkk I've had to do this in the past, and even used software that select DNS servers dynamically. It's a heck of a lot simpler when Cox does what it's supposed to do. It seems (in this area) whenever things are going well, "upgrades" and changes can screw things up. The DNS problems more or less coincide with actual speed upgrades in the local area. Interestingly enough, I see higher speeds to major metro centers that are reached by going off the Cox network than I do with metro centers accessed from within the Cox network. (This is subjective, since I certainly don't know all the details.) |

1 edit | DNS problems continue on an intermittent basis. Naturally, as usual, Cox Middle GA Customer service claims "no problems".
What problems do I see? Speed tests after the upgrade show that upload speeds are higher, perhaps a bit too high if this was gained at the expense of download speeds. (As high as 3-4Mb/s upload, and 4-6-Mbps download) This was ~1Mbp/s up and 12-13 Mb/s down before the problems started. The problems seem to be related to the switch back and forth between "powerboost" and normal data transfer rates. In addition, a high % of packets (30-40%) are typically "out of order", using »miranda.ctd.anl.gov/ as a testing site.
Smoke Ping shows latency to be ~ 80. Past latency test results (a month ago and previous) were much less, in the 40 range. |

If it is the latter, then there could be any number of issues - to include DNS timeouts but to be sure you need to isolate your test
I just checked the primary nameserver for Macon and got 134ms on an uncached query

If you could take a moment to do a similar test when you are getting the time out messages to see if the issue is the nameservers themselves? |

Besides browser "address not found" errors, there are also other symptoms, such as during file transfers via non Cox newsgroups. (Microsoft, Corel, etc.

And combines 4.2.2.1 4.2.2.2 4.2.2.3 4.2.2.4 DNS addresses and opendns be added in your DHCP client that if you are running linux computer that will help big lots. -- Professional Linux environmental blows microsoft windows out of the water. |

Some T3's are normal but if you see a bunch of these occurring, then we need to start looking for return path impairments.
In this instance, you had one in the morning and then another one 15 hours later so that doesn't concern me. The other errors are just normal network fluff... the modems are actually quite chatty in regard to what errors they log and not all are significant. |

2 edits | I didn't see anything that pointed to major problems either. The DNS difficulties come and go. Perhaps the only thing I wonder about is the 42% out of order packet messages from the gov test site. This sort of makes a bit of sense, in that streaming video (even heavily buffered) often has small sound or video "glitches". My cell phone can utilize my closed access wifi, and actually has more serious problems with streaming video, since buffering memory and processing speed is considerably less than that of my desktop P/C. It's also possible that my "node" is getting overloaded, due to a recent influx of families with teenagers in my neighborhood and the subdivisions around us. (Older folks moving out, younger families moving in) |
