| This might have been the most exciting part of the first match.... | USMNT Starting XI | Adu vs half the opposing team | Not pretty but it is a goal | It's in the net... | Again not pretty but a goal none the less | I love the look on the defender's face | Holden looks happy with that | I think Davies just about made the Grenada keeper wet himself with this goal | The keeper needs his reflexes checked. Rogers taps one in |
Having been to most Sounders games I had very high expectations for the Gold Cup. I mean after all it is the USMNT fresh off an astounding performance in the Confederations Cup, who wouldn't want to go?
I had visions of 67K filling the stadium. Then I heard there were around 20K tickets left. Still 47K is a nice crowd. Then I got there and saw the stadium was still in it's Sounders configuration of 32K seats. A whopping 15K showed up for the two matches. I was prepared for this by the lack of enthusiasm online (Holiday, poor match-ups, heat, first game of a non-FIFA cup game, any number of excuses for not going) but it was still a let down. I felt the National Team deserved a better showing even if it was a lame opponent in the group stage of a CONCACAF cup game.
Haiti vs Honduras was the first match of the night. I figured this should be fun to watch. Without having a horse in the race, so to speak, I could just sit back and enjoy a nice match without any stress of worrying about my team. In theory that was true but the game was so poorly played that I found myself having a hard time enjoying it.
Honduras isn't all that bad of a team but they played down to Haiti's level so the whole game was pretty much kick the ball as hard as you can down the field and pray your team can get to it first. There were occasional bright spots but for the most part it was a snooze-fest. On the bright side Honduras had some energetic fans.
The US game was better but it was a total mismatch. The US Squad is far from what they had in South Africa but even so they made Grenada look like a U13 team. With such a disparity in ability the game never did get all that exciting but it was the US Mens National Team and just getting to see them play was a treat.
I have read a lot of comments about the horns... The horns unfortunately are sold in the Sounders team shop. They were put out by the team before anyone knew what the crowd would be like and unfortunately they sell well enough that the team won't pull them off the shelf.
At a Sounders game they are annoying but get drowned out for the most part by the constant cheering and energy of the crowd. It sucks to have one near you but otherwise they fade into the background noise. With the small turn out yesterday and the abnormally high ratio of kids to adults the horns were the primary noise maker at the game. It was like everyone that had them at Sounders games showed up with them yesterday without the other 18K fans to help keep that annoying noise in check.
We had two of them near us yesterday. As I suspected the kids were blowing them to see how loud or how long they could blow them, or just blowing them in siblings ears to annoy them, their activity had absolutely nothing to do with the action on the field. I truly hope the Sounders discontinue selling these next season but I am not going to hold my breath.
Despite the horns and the level of play I would gladly purchase tickets to this event again. Any opportunity to see the National Team in action is worth it. Maybe next time they are in town it will be a better opponent. -- And so it goes in life.... one minute everything is coming up roses the next you are being torn apart amongst the thorns.

We played a lot better tonight than we did against Jamaica. However still 1 more game left and nothing is for sure yet. If we lose there's a huge possibility of 3 way tie. So going to have to win our final game, and hope Jamaica can get a win themselves.

| Re: [Soccer] Gold Cup That was a pretty sloppy game. Both goalies weren't at their best. Should of been 1-1 as Canada's 2nd goal and Costa Rica's first goal were garbage.
I'm happy we advance top of the group, but hopefully resting players and putting on a performance like this doesn't weaken team morale. That's the risk one takes in resting players.

If I have converted times correctly in my head.... The Canada game looks like it kicks off about an hour into our game. | Re: [Soccer] Gold Cup Ah, I can't take this. Every time Canada builds momentum we run into Honduras. Every time we run into Honduras the CONCAF referees make a name for themselves. This is just getting ridiculous.
Honduras played good, and once the goal was scored they played some good counter-attacking football almost scoring on a couple of chances. I'll give merit where it's deserved. However, that was nowhere near a penalty and totally changed the game. The Honduras player went for a bicycle kick, of course he's going to fall on his back after kicking the ball. This was the first time I've seen a penalty given for a failed bicycle kick. Not to mention the Honduras player had a hold of the Canadians shirt.
I remember a couple years ago we played Honduras, might of been for World Cup qualifying, we scored 2 twice to equalize, yet both goals were called back for offside. Funny thing was, both goals weren't even close calls where you could give the officials the benefit of the doubt.
I guess we Canadians should start expecting this now, every time we play Honduras. It's just frustrating losing that way. We had chances to score, missed them. So Canada can blame themselves as well, but frustrating as hell losing to the officials.
Good luck to the USA. | |

| US managed to progress even if it did take getting kicked in the gut for a PK at the last minute.... Sorry to hear about Canada I have heard that was a very questionable call.
The Sounders/Chelsea match was a blast. While a win would have been great I think the guys made a decent showing of themselves. Being the first game of the year for Chelsea, with a new coach no less, they were far from top form.
It was a typical Sounders performance with the ball in the final third time after time only to be crossed to nowhere or shot just wide/high of the goal when they did take the shot. If the team could just finish a little more reliably they would be unstoppable in MLS, as it is they tend to dominate possession with little to show for it.
The atmosphere at Qwest with 65K+ soccer crazed fans in the stands was amazing. Hopefully when Barca comes in a couple weeks we can replicate the feeling. I took about 16GB worth of pictures but have yet to even start going through them. Hopefully I had a few that will be worth sharing, We were in the nosebleed section so I am not holding my breath on that one though, still I had to try. -- And so it goes in life.... one minute everything is coming up roses the next you are being torn apart amongst the thorns.

| Re: [Soccer] Gold Cup said by SK :That 65,000 crowd looked wild, well done! Do you foresee that happening in any of the MLS games as well? I could easily see 65K+ at MLS matches up here if the ownership would open up the upper bowl and the team had a title or two under our belts. Currently I think we could probably reach 40K easily but 65K-67K is probably unrealistic. Still, that being said, most of the fans at the game Saturday were there wearing rave green and cheering for the Sounders which was good to see. I would have hated to see 20K-30K EPL fans like most international matches get.
Currently the Owners are trying to grow interest with the continuing string of sell out games. If they opened up too many seats too quickly they might not be able to sell them all so they are growing it slowly and only when they are absolutely sure the new seats will sell out. Hence why it took half a season for them to change from the 27K configuration to the current 32K configuration.
Originally the plan was for Qwest to be set up for 24K and they only expanded that when they broke 20K in season ticket sales. Then they only gave in and expanded to 32K after every regular season game sold out completely. To hedge their bets on filling the new seats they chose the half way point in the season and sold them as half-season tickets with tickets to Chelsea, Barca, and MLS Cup thrown in. With that sweet of a deal and a high demand for tickets the new seats sold out in record time.
Unfortunately the next logical section of the stadium that would make sense to open up is the "Hawk's Nest" the raised section at the North End of the field. Microsoft paid big bucks to have their Xbox 360 logo displayed on those seats so opening them would be a tough financial decision. If they choose not to do that it leaves opening the upper bowl as the next option and that nearly doubles the capacity of the stadium which would be hard to guarantee a sell out. When I was up there Saturday I saw what a nightmare it would be to try and restrict seating as the upper section does not appear to have been built with any thought to restricting access to certain portions of it as the lower bowl was.
In 2011 when Portland and Vancouver join the league I could see those games filling nearly any size stadium they wanted to use. The rivalries between the three teams has been going on for a long time now and the expanded fanbases of those teams when they hit MLS would result in some epic crowds if given the chance.
Our friendly against Real will be at BMO Field, however the later CONCACAF Champions League matches (if we reach that stage) will be held at the Skydome. That will be f'in epic. Nice. I can imagine the Skydome full of crazy soccer fans would be quite the show.
Now that Toronto has finally manage to make it past the pair of USL-1 competitors to capture the Voyageurs Cup they have developed a taste for silverware have they? -- And so it goes in life.... one minute everything is coming up roses the next you are being torn apart amongst the thorns.
