What's going on with Telus ADSL in BC?

Today internet access was being blocked for hours by some new MAC address registration sign-in page that didn't recognize anything. Then it just went away and normal service came back after about the 5th release/renew cycle.

My upload speed has been cut to less than half (650 Kbps -> 250 Kbps) in the last few weeks, while my download speed (always a dismal 2 Mbps) remains the same.

I haven't been able to get my online bill this month because the online account server has been "not available at this time" for days.

Is Telus finally falling apart?

There is a trick you can try to see your speed will be more stable and consistant. Basically it will reset your internet account and give you what you are paying for.

Step one:
-Log into »registerdevice.telus.com
-remove the device listing for your routers/computers
-Log Out.

Step Two:
-Power Cycle the Modem/Router/Computer
-Open the internet browser and you should be able to browse the internet.

You are now complete. Hope it helps.

I tried that, and it did help, thanks Glowduke. What I'm normally seeing when I run a test at speedtest.net is an initial burst of normal upload speed, followed by a sudden crash back to half speed, same with all hosts. What would cause that?

Still no luck retrieving my online account statement after a week of:

"We are making changes to telus.com and are currently unable to process your request online. Please dial 310-2255 for assistance. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Telus has supposedly been making changes to the online account system for the last 6 months, resulting in an inconvenient 5-stage double login to retrieve account statements. It looks like their efforts haven't resulted in much improvement so far! Maybe the guy who was working on it went on vacation?

The Guy isn't on vacation, lol. You need to call in to reset your password with a frontline agent. Either too many failed attempts, or your account got migrated, etc; those will cause the issue to exist.

As for the burst, I have not seen that before. What site are you using? and which server are you using? Also, what modem do you have?

I usually speedtest with 3-4 sites in Washington, Oregon and California, since they give better and more consistent results than local Canadian sites in Vancouver and Calgary (e.g. ping times under 40 msec instead of close to 200 msec for the Canadian sites). My modem is one of the old 3Coms, which you may recall works fine for the speed range my line is capable of, and it works far better than newer modems on long lines. As I said, my download speed remains consistent at just under 2 Mbps to all sites at any time of day, which is the limit of my line. But until a few weeks ago I could consistently get 650 Kbps upload - now it is consistently half of that, although it seemed to improve a bit after the procedure you suggested.

3COM. The only good purpose for these robust modems of yesterday is to use them to as door stops today. I would lean to believe you have a failing modem as those items are quite old and lately have been failing after 10+ years of service. I would also be curious as to the type of port you are installed on (DMT1or2, or ADSL2+) as this could be a combination problem. If you want to change to a new Thomson Modem, I would call 310-tech, explain you have a router that you want to continue to use, and insist on a Thomson Modem [unfortunately you have to sweet talk your way into one]). If you run into problems after trying this, you could PM your number to me and will get one of the team members to ship it to you.

No, it's not a failing modem. I have two of the 3Coms, as well as a Thomson and a Zoom (from Uniserve) that I can borrow. I know you folks who believe newer is better have a hard time with this, but the 3Com consistently does the best if operating within its speed limit.

Don't know the port type. It was on 1.5 Mbps service for years, switched to "3 Mbps" last year.

Humor me. Lets see the speed test results with the Thomson vs. 3Com. I would also, to check your port for compatibility issues. If you don't mind, PM me your number or Billing Account number.
