Explorer 4250hd no signal to Sony Bravia

New Sony Bravia 40" HDTV 1080i (40V5100) and Bravia 32" HDTV 1080i (32XBR9). Cablevision gave us 2 Explorer 4250hd boxes. Neither the component cables (from Cablevision with the boxes) or the hdmi cables (Monster brand from BestBuy) work. We only get video and audio to the TVs when we use a coax cable directly. We have tried every setting on the TVs and checked the 4250 settings. Also, its not a cable signal issue; we tried a room where we know the Cablevision signal into the box is strong, just in case the other rooms had weak signals. We've read Sony's guides, the 4250 guides (available at Cisco.com). We googled to see if others have had same issue and we found that those who have had issues have had issues with the hdmi only not the component hookup also.

So, we're thinking the 4250s are defective.

Are the inputs on the TV changed to the input the component or hdmi cable is being put into? Sounds like the TVs are on antenna input, since you get vid/audio with coax screwed into TV.

Re: Explorer 4250hd no signal to Sony Bravia

Got it working, by accident. We hooked up coax directly so we could watch TV but left in the component hookups anyway. While watching, we pressed the Input button on the Sony remote (not the Cablevision remote) and got list of input devices (Component 1, HDMI, etc). We switched to Component 1 and voila, that worked; we disconnected coax to make sure. We then tried the HDMI cable (disconnecting Component 1 and using Input button to switch input device) and that worked. Ditto on second TV, so both are working.

In our defense, this was not in either the Sony manuals or Cablevision setup guide. Sony guide made no mention of first needing to hook up to coax then select Input button on remote to switch to the desired input device before using that input device. And Cablevision guide (the big visual guide sheet) said *either* use standard hookup via coax *or* use Component 1 or HDMI. And the Cablevision tech we spoke to had no clue what the problem was.

I guess you've never hooked up anything to a TV with anything other than a coax before.. Yes, thats what you have to do -- select the input (which is why they are labeled as such onthe back of the TV)

i'm glad you understand how it works now.

my uncles family bought a new plasma and the cablevision guy hooked them up with composite for some reason.
they watched standard cable for three months til i saw the picture for the first time and realized the huge mistake.

I still don't understand why people spend $100 or more for a set of cables when a least expensive type would do the same job.

I'm pretty sure if the poster didn't know that he had to select the input, that he had no idea he could have gotten the same, if not better quality, cables from monoprice.com

I got a smaller Sony Bravia. And a D-Link DSM-510 "Media Lounge" to pull my media files from my computer (using the TVersity media server). Unlike the ancient Zenith, which it replaces, the Sony Bravia has multiple inputs (as you finally discovered). But I've also worked with a Kenwood that has two video inputs, so I was already aware of the issue with multiple inputs.

Sorry, but the Bravia manual definitely does explain the input select on the menu. Different model, so the page numbering may not match, but my manual has the explanation for the remote on page 25.

BTW, Best Buy tried to sell me the Monster HDMI cable, but I opted for a less expensive "no-name" brand in the store. It connects the D-Link to the Bravia, and works perfectly.

Even with the no-name, which I believe would be the Dynex cables for BB, they are still charging $30 for a 6' HDMI cable -- total ripoff.. Monoprice charges $3.56 for a 6' HDMI 1.3a Cat 2 certified cable.

At the time I made the purchase, I was not aware of Monoprice. Looks like only a couple of days to get to me if I were to order from them.

E-Bay is known to everyone. Lots of cables there too. And as bad as Cablevision may be they include a set of component cables with every HD box to get you going.

For new, I'd rather not.

Cablevision doesn't provide cable service here, and I don't have cable TV service, anyway. The box I bought at Fry's Electronics; made by D-Link. Only came with a component cable. The box has nothing to do with either cable TV (Comcast), or satellite TV (DirecTV).
