1 edit | reply to MHAB The folks that live at the far end of our street had a similar situation with there our street meets that maid drag.
Signs didn't work.
The homeowner instead built a small mound of organic mulch along one edge, and added stones to the mound for decoration. It looks nice and stopped the plodding through his grass.

The mulch pile is just wide enough that you cannot conveniently cross it without stepping in it. And it is very fine mulch, so it will soil the shoes.
Perhaps something similar, or even just a small, decorative chain strung along the same path will work.

Glo-in-the-dark optional, of course... -- That's how you be great! That's how you be great! Oh my goodness man, we did it, baby! |

| reply to MHAB A few well placed, and highly visible, dog turds should do the trick. Make them think they are going to risk walking in a minefield and they might choose another path. No one likes to be cleaning poop off their shoes.

| reply to MHAB We planted a bunch of roses along our street-facing perimeter. They're the kind designed to grow together to form a hedge. Even at this early stage, most people don't like to stray to close to them, lest the thorns screw them up. They're pretty and they smell great and make a great natural fence.
On the other hand, your yard's likely to need watering. Put a "facing-in" sprinkler system along the edge of your yard that borders the street and sidewalk. Make sure the nozzles are aimed inward. Then, put a motion sensor on your lawn that activates the sprinklers. The only people that will get wet will be the ones that are *IN* your yard. -- The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell |

| reply to MHAB Does the trespassing seem to happen around a specific time each day, like the end of school, or is it random? If it occurs at about the same time you might be able to use your existing sprinklers to see if they water would be a deterrent. Do you think starting with a verbal "Hi guys, we're trying to get our grass established, could you help" approach might work? |

| reply to MHAB A former co-worker of mine has nearly the exact same problem. There are two schools down the "no-sidewalk" street, one of them being a high school. I imagine the high schoolers are the worst offenders.
He uses stakes along the boundary and strings fluorescent orange flagging tape between them. The "fence" extends far enough in both directions to make it obvious foot traffic is not welcome across the lawn.
The stakes appear to be the dark green plastic ones you find in the garden center for staking up plants. They are 3-4 feet tall. I haven't talked to the guy in several years, but drive past his place every day. He has been doing this for at least 10 years.
I have also noticed he takes down the flagging tape every summer when school gets out ( but leaves the stakes). I guess the kids are too busy during the summer to walk across his lawn. -- We were taking a vote when the ground came up and hit us. |

| reply to Daarken said by Daarken :liability... that is what it will come down to. build the fence and your liability is reduced, do nothing and your chances and liability go thru the roof.. good luck The people cutting across his lawn are trespassers. If they were invitees, the OP would be liable and have to reasonably provide for their safety.
However, because they are trespassers, the OP is only liable for any injury that results to trespassers as a result of an intentional act on his part. For example, if he ran fishing wire across and someone tripped and hurt themselves, he would be liable.
If a trespasser cuts across his lawn and trips on, for example, a rake the OP leaves in the yard, he is not liable b/c the injury was not the result of deliberate action on his part. -- "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble." |

| reply to MHAB LOL... your diagram is a lot like mine. We have a retaining wall on the side where the lower part of where your sidewalk is, though. Ultimately, I plan to put in some chainlink around the whole house, plant some hedge, etc... I have some work to do on the retaining wall first.
We have a number of shortcutters... I just don't really care that much. I figure it's like an attractive nuisance... the fact that the way is unobstructed (for now) is too much for some people to pass up saving a few seconds while walking.
Anyway, you could always chain up a ferocious critter to keep people away...
