speedtest fast but actual download speed slow

Hi,

My DL speed has suddenly become slow. When running the speed test at dslreports, the site says my dl speed is 133 kb/s while my upload speed is 200 kb/s. However, when I actually download stuff, such as with megaupload or rapidshare, i experience speeds ranging from 4.0 kb/s to 25 kb/s.

I have Spyware Doctor and Symantec Antivirus running on my computer. I connect to the internet with a realtek wireless 802.11g 54 mbps usb adapter, and my wireless network is from a linksys WRT54g router.

I ran the SG TCP Optimizer for Windows XP and clicked optimal settings. This however did not change anything. I have also unplugged and the linksys router.

Any solutions?

The Megaupload FAQ states that, "Depending on your connectivity to our server network, throughput may be limited and slower than what you expect." A wikipedia article on RapidShare suggests that free users might experience downloads as slow as 25 kB/s.

Have you tried downloading a Knoppix Live .iso file? Visited one of the Uni NDT sites:

»netspeed.stanford.edu/
»nitro.ucsc.edu/
»miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/

It may just be limitations of the online storage services.
