new mlpp offering

Hi. last year when I first joined teksavvy, I only had 1 pc and I enabled mlpp directly through my windows dialer. It worked fine with the Thomson ST516 modem in bridge mode.

I know other people were buying Linksys routers and using tomato and such, but it seemed like it'd take more time/brain cells and hardware than I wanted to invest in at that time. So when it stopped working some time later, I was out of luck.

Now, I hear teksavvy has solved the problem and is offering mlpp in a separate plan. I'm interested in it, but since then I have picked up a new laptop which came with a free DLink DIR-615 wireless N router. Can someone tell me if I'd need to get one of those WRT routers, or what kind of set-up I'd need with the new plan? Sorry for the stupid newbie question.

Thanks,
jam

Re: new mlpp offering

Methods have been covered in detail in other threads here (please review them), but suffice it to say that so far there aren't any DLink routers that support Tomato, so you would need to try one of the other methods mentioned in the threads if you do not wish to buy any of the Tomato compatible routers, which, BTW, include only SOME of the Linksys ones.

As you likely have heard, the old MLPPP support at TSI was unofficial and was stopped due to technical problems it caused, and they added a bunch of new gear to do it the new way, so....

Yes, in any case, you would need to contact TSI to arrange alternate Login credentials to use along with whatever method you choose, and if you do not already subscribe to a Static IP, then TSI will raise your monthly by $4 plus tax for doing MLPPP for you.

Thanks for the reply. I thought perhaps now that it was officially supported that there might be an easier way.

I just saw another post on the same topic right below me. I guess I'm being a little repetitive.

will look for more info or post there.

You can also enable it in the dialer again, in bridged mode. The new hardware addressed that but it costs $4/m

So would I have to use HiVolt's solution »Re: Any ideas how to Do MLPP ? with xp? if I wanted to network 2 pcs with a non-tomato router and the dialer? I take it if I used this solution I'd be able to use the dialer on either pc, but only 1 at a time, or it'd take up 2 ip addresses?

I would probably use mlpp every now and then, in heavy spurts on one of the pcs, but I'd definitely want web/e-mail access on both at all times.

Thanks for your help.

Re: new mlpp offering

That sounds reasonable.

I had not seen that particular thread m'self but prob'ly yes, and now would still need to contact TSI, $$, etc., as we covered above.

i would say go with a wrt54gl and tomato firmware, it's ridiculously easy to setup. Pretty much anyone who can access the router via web browser are capable of getting mlppp setup.
