He left India in May of 1942 and didn't arrive back in the US until July 1942. The CBI patch wasn't created until July/Aug. 1942. So he wasn't there for the transition to the CATF.

The AVG (American Volunteer Group)/(Flying Tigers) Flew their first combat mission in early December 1942, and were disbanded about 9 months later.
