Cloud-based computing will be "extremely dangerous"

DarkReading | Jun 30, 2009

Reformed black-hat hacker Michael Calce, better known as the 15-year-old "mafiaboy" who, in 2000, took down Websites CNN, Yahoo, E*Trade, Dell, Amazon, and eBay, says widespread adoption of cloud computing is going to make the Internet only more of a hacker haven.

"It will be the fall of the Internet as we know it," Calce said today during a Lumension Security-sponsored Webcast event. "You're basically putting everything in one little sandbox...it's going to be a lot more easy to access," he added, noting that cloud computing will be "extremely dangerous."

"This is not the last you're going to hear of this," he said.

Paul Henry, security and forensics expert for Lumension, says cloud computing, indeed, will open up new avenues of risk. "We haven't even handled the fundamentals of [securing it] in our existing environments," Henry said during an interview after the Webcast. "Now we're going to push it up to the cloud?"

Why would anyone want to store info like this? It's proven daily that servers are not secure and are subjected to exploits. To me, it's locking a door and leaving the key under the mat.

Because people are stupid, or just arn't aware of all the potential pitfalls.

Disasters are certain to happen, but not to me and you hey !

Well for me a little guy cloud computing for some things even storage is good if cheap enough. I have digital photos I do not want to lose. Store them at home then with backups another place then also online. Online is a third backup solution and benefit I can easily access from anywhere to show off photos.
If info was important I would just make sure to encrypt before storage. Plus always pick a decent company.

Right now the trend is towards "cloud based" applications, it's gonna really be bad when OS's go to the "cloud" model.

I've been told I'm not a very nice guy.
Considering the source, I can live with that.

Unless things change drastically, I won't ever adopt that model for my home-based computers.
