[Win7RC Install Disc]To burn as *.iso or as unpacked?

Click for full size
OK, I have downloaded the Win7RC.

The directions at Microsoft on a webpage named "How to Install the Windows 7 Release Candidate"
read as follows:
The RC download is an ISO file, which you'll need to burn onto a blank disc before you can install it. To do that, you'll need to use software designed for burning ISO files.

So here's my question. Does one need the 3.2Gb *.iso file on a DVD *OR* the unpacked contents of this .iso distribution file.

The unpacked contents are visible here in the attached photo.
It is a UDF file system DVD.

And if one is supposed to burn the .iso file, how does one do this with Nero, please?

Nero 9 is not my friend today

Just grab IMGBurn (free) and choose what I've highlighted in the above image. It's simple...

[EDIT] All you need to do (my 2nd image) is choose the source file (the Win7 ISO), choose a burner, pop a blank DVD into your drive and then click the burn button (the 2 icons on the bottom left of the window).

Wow, IMGBurn has never failed me... I know many people here swear by it as well. Oh well,
Hopefully, someone who uses Nero 9 can help you. Good luck!

Just remember... you're burning the ISO as a bootable image. Do not burn the files themselves or the just the ISO file itself as data. It'll never boot...

[EDIT] Typo.

Once I opened the ISO I put the files on a flash drive after making the drive bootable. For the problem of opening the ISO use WINRAR. You can find it by googling it.

Don't you have to burn it at a certain speed? Something like 4x or lower to avoid errors?

I didn't need to burn a dvd to install 7..but then again I didn't download from M$.

But the FILE-EXTENSION is *.iso, right?

All *.iso files (even this 3Gb one) are images, right?

How is the difference of data vs. bootable conveyed, please?

That is, what makes it bootable?

Thank you, Ugly

Well, on my system, Nero associated .iso's with it. So for me, I just double-click on the *.iso file.

However, manually in Nero 8 is under the 'Recorder' menu, the selection called 'Burn Image'

And to your later post, all .iso files are generally images, yes.

There are certain flags in the UDF format that makes the system recognize the disc as bootable. While you could, in theory, go through and create a bootable disc manually with Nero, there's really no reason to.

To ztmike See Profile: I haven't had to lower a burning speed on a CD for years.

That is true for me too, except the compliation will not burn, or will not burn correctly.
I've made quite a few coasters already.

In v.9 it's called Burn DVD-image, I think.

Thank you.
I was wondering if somehow the file-extension was an issue.
Happily, THAT is not my problem.

Interesting that you bring-up UDF.
Whenever I try to burn the image as a single file, the Nero says something to effect, This file is larger than 2Gb, so try burning it under the UDF format, or something like this.
And of course, THAT is not making an image file on my DVD either.

Strangly, I do not know HOW the *.iso image gets decompressed or unpacked into the several folders and many files when the burning gives a non-iso result.

Other times -- when the resultant coaster appears BLANK to Windows Explorer, as if it were really empty -- one can easily look with naked eyes at the DVD to see something was burned.
Yet whatever had been burned is not recognizable as anything, let alone an *.iso image file.

You can try this free program. I use it and its small and straight forward.

»infrarecorder.org/

All you do is put the dvd in your burner.
Start the program.
Choose this option.

Follow the prompts and select your file, yourfile.iso
And tell it ok.

You need to set the speed in Imgburn to either 8x (or less) or the speed rating of the blanks if they are less than 8x. The green icon in the lower right will bring up the speed selection window. Set the Disc write speed to 8x and click add then OK. When you open a new batch of blanks you need to check the Imgburn write speed and set it if necessary because even if they are the same type and brand they may have a different ID. The Ids on my screen that are set to 2.4x are dual layer.

What brand and type of blanks are you using? I have been using TDK DVD-R single layer with Imgburn at 8x with no problems. I used them to burn both the 32 and 64 bit RC1 DVDs.

I usually buy Verbatium DVD+R DL for dual layer (the author of Imgburn recommends these for dual layer). I currently burn all dual layer media at 2.4x.
