Windows XP and Vista users can still download DirectX for legacy OS's, in case they still want to use 98 and also own the older OS and a suitable machine (or virtual machine).
I think Microsoft are offering such downloads as a perk to their "paying customers" (those who buy their newer OS's, 10 yrs ago doesn't count to them). |

Any Microsoft download requiring validation is totally useless for Win98 users since the validate procedure no longer works for Win98. I'd be unable to download it if it weren't on falconfly and maybe some other sites. |

Actually MS does have older versions, but they still require validation to download. Just search the Download Center [»www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx ].

Thanks for the helpful link to old Directx 9.0c versions. I tried old version found on FileHippo, but it didn't work. It's actaully Win98se I'm running, and the last Directx 9.0c version supporting Win98se was installed successfully. Nero Vision that needed Directx 9.0c now works as it should.
I find it strange Microsoft doesn't have older Directx versions on their site because they do have older versions of Media Player there. Maybe their agenda is to force customers to upgrade the OS. However, Win98se still runs some older apps that the newer Windows don't or runs older apps better than newer Windows. |

There are multiple versions of 9.0c since 2005. Apparently the last DirectX 9.0c version officially supporting Win98 was the original (first version of 9.0c) released 22-Jul-2004 (or the 08-Dec-2006 update for Win98SE). The most recent 9.0c update officially requires Windows2000 or above, despite what it says on MS download page. You might have to get an older version of 9.0c though I would try downloading the full installer first, instead of the web updater.
A quick search located this site with download links for the older versions if needed. I have not tested any downloads however...

There is also a disclaimer stating, "Above DirectX 9.0c Operating System requirements are likely not 100% correct, as conflicting information exists from different sources (e.g. Wikipedia)" so other, perhaps newer version may possibly run. |

Wow, what irony.... Send an e-mail to Microsoft please, even though it's no longer mainstream support that is just stupid to require validation for Win9x software when it can't validate. Maybe if you use IE it will see you're using Win9x, and not require validation?
babystars, it seems that link is only applies to XP, and higher, however maybe they just didn't list all of the supported operating systems on their site.

| Microsoft shows Directx 9.0c is supported in Win98 but requests validation to download. However, clicking on "Validate" and choosing validation tool says validation tool is not supported by Win98. I tried downloading Directx 9.0c and extracting it to a folder, but executing it from the folder gives message that a file it needs isn't found. I've installed it in Win98 before, but it must have been before the validation process was implemented. Is there some way to install Directx 9.0c in Win98 now? |
