DNS - Truncated Response

Greetings,

Sorry if this isn't the correct forum. I live in NH and have AT&T.
I signed up at att.net a few years ago but all my traffic is routed
through Covad. I noticed the post has @covad.net under my
name however I use @att.net for my login / e-mail.

The problem I'm having is I get a lot of the following errors:

DNS: Truncated Response

in my router logs and browsing seems to be quite slow. This just
started happening within the last week. I'm running XP Pro and
connected to a Westell 327w via a cable (not wireless).

I've tried using the DNS servers that are auto-assigned and also
manually entering some servers listed on the Covad website. No
matter what I use, my log quickly fills up with those errors. In
some cases I get 50 in an hour while others it may only be 5.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many routers set the router as the DNS server, and the router forwards the request for the user.

The trouble with this, is that the router DNS forwarding only works for UDP requests. What is supposed to happen, is that when a reply is truncated the resolver code follows up with a TCP request which normally won't be truncated.

I have DNS servers directly configured in my desktop, so as to avoid this problem. I am currently experimenting with a router that tells the client computer the real DNS server, so that router forwarding of DNS queries is not used. It seems to be more reliable.

That sounds like you have 'AT&T Worldnet DSL Service'. ATTW resells Covad DSL services. You are, maybe, in Verizon territory?

In any case, if I leave my router at the DHCP DNS server setting, it uses my modem ([192.168.0.1]) as the DNS server. And if I leave the router acting as a DNS relay, as well, I have trouble. So I have configured the ATTIS (I have 'at&t Yahoo! HSI', not 'AT&T Worldnet DSL') 'Anycast' DNS servers on my router, and "DNS Relay" is disabled.
