| [hard drive] Maxtor 320gb drive lost info
I have a Maxtor 320gb hard drive that was in my file server in fat32 format. I used this to save extra stuff from my Mac's and Pc's on. When I went to access the drive it didn't show up in Windows Xp Pro anymore. I rebooted the pc and it showed up but not as the name I had it. When I checked it had been changed from fat32 to ntfs and all of my info was gone. I have been looking for a way to get my info back and found none. Is it gone? The drive shows up in Windows but when you check properties, it shows up empty or drive is not formatted. Most of my info was backed up somewhere else too but I would like to get some of the other stuff back too. Please help me figure this out.. |

| I have stopped using Maxtor drives because of this reason. Last fall I had three Maxtor drives do exactly as you described. I performed all kinds of checks on the first drive and nothing showed up. I reformatted and reloaded it but that was only a temporary fix. Shortly thereafter it lost all data again. Then the other two drives went. I replaced them with Western Digital and Samsung drives. I have not had any problem since them. |

| Same thing has happened with my 160GB DiamondMax drive.. For some reason, the first few sectors of the drive goes to lunch, and the drive appears as it has not been formatted.
I found a program called TestDisk, which let me recover the original partition.

I ended up recovering the partition, then fixing MBR and MFT, and then rebooting. I then had to run CHKDSK /F (for some reason to get the darn drive to be seen in Windows). It came back to life. I was able to get the data off the drive and onto another drive.
Now I have to replace it... I am going to take the drive out to the gun range and put a .40 S&W through it.... -- "F is for Fire that burns down the whole town... U is for Uranium...... Bombs... N is for NO SURVIVORS!!!!!" Sheldon Plankton |

| reply to evgray Maxtor drive doesn't work well on XP pro.
You can try to install/re-install that Maxtor drive' Driver if XP pro does not recognize it. -- »www.911-harddrive-recovery.org |
