Re: 55 bugs in new Firefox 3.5: users are posting complaints

I've been running FireFox for years now, but I notice some issue with the newest upgrade.

Sometimes if I maximize FireFox after running in the background, and if try to visit any website, it won't load any webpage in any tab. The status bar won't show anything. The FireFox animated icon in the tab will spin forever. Nothing else happens, like actually loading the webpage I requested.

If open a new tab and go to a common website like Yahoo or Google, it does the same thing (no status bar information, the FireFox animated icon in the tab will spin forever - no webpage loads).

If I close FireFox and restart it, then it works again for X hours before it repeats itself. I did not have this issue with previous FireFox releases.

Not sure if that is a "crash" or not, but it might as well be if the browser doesn't work properly unless it's restarted. Only plugins I'm using is 1-Click Weather, NoScript and Adblock Plus.

Other issue I noticed in the newest FireFox, atleast on my machine, eats more resources than normal (even more than previous FireFox versions). I used to be able to leave FireFox minimized in the background overnight, now I can't leave it for a few hours before I notice a performance issue (or the issue described above). My computer is a 3.0GhZ Pentium 4 with 2GB of memory.

I have not seen any problem with the new FF, nor have my wife and daughter who are heavy gamers.

I am sure there are some issues out there, and they will be fixed quickly.

The Mozilla folks fix problems FAR quicker than the Microsofters.

Sometimes with new major releases issues occur. Users who would enjoy helping to improve Firefox, rather than merely trolling and/or complaining, are invited to participate in:

Firefox BugDay - Catch Missed Blocker, Critical, and Major 3.5 bugs!
Start: 2009-07-07 05:00
Timezone: America/Chicago (UTC -5 hours) -
said by Mozilla :
This Bug Day, we'll be focusing on unconfirmed bugs reported using Firefox 3.5. It's important to find any severe bugs that were missed during the release cycle. Any blocker, critical, or major bugs that are found could get fixed in the upcoming Firefox 3.5.1 or another maintenance release.

How do I get ready?

Meet us on #bugday for help and guidance. You can use this URL for a good search query to get started with.

This is what we're doing...

During this Bug Day, we will focus on narrowing down unconfirmed bugs to find any important ones that have been reported, looking especially for regressions in Firefox 3.5 that weren't in Firefox 3.0. Once we find them, we'll hand them off to developers to get them into a "point" update (e.g., Firefox 3.5.1).

Triage, what is it?

Well, simply put, triage is taking a bug, making sure it has enough information to reproduce, and ensuring that it is in the proper component. After that, you should try to reproduce the issue. Problems that are easily reproducible (such as a crash that occurs every time you visit a certain website), are more valuable than those that are impossible to reproduce. If you can reproduce a bug, please add a comment to the bug or recommend in #bugday that the bug be confirmed.

For more information on triage, please check out the Bug Triage Guidelines and Project.

Help make Firefox 3.5 even better!

The Mozilla folks are to be complimented on their openness and also their speedy response to these issues.

This is the exact OPPOSITE of the approach used by the Microsofties.

Users are posting complaints. Enough said. Do you even know where to go to complain about IE? Good luck with that.

Microsoft offers free phone support for IE. Where is the number to call Mozilla for free support?

Sure, no luck necessary. You can use Microsoft's Internet Explorer public forums which are also accessible via NNTP. Typically Microsoft representatives will reply within a day.

Microsoft's support is limited:

"Support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage is available via the phone based on your locale. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain environment. Free phone support for Internet Explorer 8 is limited to installation, set-up and usage only. Advanced issues are not supported. Advanced issues include problems that are associated with software and hardware development, network connectivity, server-based technologies, and business-critical systems."

I have had occasion to call Microsoft support for other issues, have even paid for it, and have not found it useful or pleasant. In fact, the best way to get help for Microsoft problems is to Google the problem. We're all grownups here, we know this is true.

----------------------------

As for Mozilla support, why would anyone need phone support for Firefox or Thunderbird? I can't conceive of such a circumstance, except perhaps in rare situations. I say this seriously, not in any sarcastic way.

I've noticed some resource hogging in the new release. On my new computer, it does not make a difference. However, on my old computer that I turned into an entertainment center for watching TV, videos on Hulu and other TV websites, FF is now a little choppy and increasingly uses up resources the longer it runs. Considering my "old" computer is still a P4 2.66 with 1.25G RAM and 256MB Vid card, you would think it would still run flawlessly, but it does not... not anymore.

Interesting, I've had the exact opposite experiences.

I called in 2008 for a licensing problem I had for Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 and a very helpful technician logged into the laptop remotely and fixed the issue, free of charge. He also left me the utility to fix it if it should happen again, as long as I don't say where I got it.

I also called again in 2009 for a problem with SBS 2008 and an obscure issue conflicting with another problem, and a very polite, senior sounding southerner sent me a patch to fix the problem.

I have not experienced any issues at all at home and at work with 3.5. But when 3.5.1 comes out I'll install it.

55 bugs in a single update? Not really even a full fledged upgrade?

Granted,
I know they'll fix it ASAP, but sheesh, did they even test it before releasing it?!!

This is just plain ridiculous and sloppy!!

I observed an interesting phenomenon with Firefox 3.5 wherein I had opened a site with lots of photos that belongs to a guy I know from a forum that we both use. Anyway, the site is fine with IE, but with Firefox 3.5, I found that the audio background music did not play and when I clicked on a small photo to enlarge it, it first opened in a tab, but then without warning, that switched to a new window. That's not a killer, but it is something that doesn't happen with IE, and the site plays properly with IEtab in Firefox 3.5. I'm not sure it's worth reporting, especially if there are 55 bugs already in the queue.

Oh, yes, as Gixxer says, it is slow to startup, but everything gets slower over the years when you are using an old computer like mine from 2002. I've only got 512MB of RAM and that's after I upgraded from 256 a few years back.

Added: I went back to the same website and the images page and this time I saw why I was not getting Audio. NoScript was blocking the audio object. So, it was not a bug in Firefox. Also, the tab did not switch to a new window this time, so I have no idea what happened previously. It is a fact that a tab can be opened in a new window, so maybe something happened the other day that caused that, but I don't think there is any Firefox bug here for that, either. Therefore, I was prudent in not bothering to report this at Bugzilla. There's nothing to report.
