"Since the update, I can no longer use the paid links at the top of Google search. It doesn't do anything...If I put it into a new tab, it opens blank and is done. I have to copy the link and paste it into the address bar and remove the google url part"
Could you provide some samples of this ? And some info on the software load you are running ?
2000 Firefox 3.5 no such issue. XP with 3.5 no such issue . Note IE 8 is not installed ! Vista occasionally will have the link turn red and nothing else happen . Clicking a second time will work correctly . Note this is a fully patched and updated Vista home . |

| reply to DownTheShore said by DownTheShore :Any new release of any browser is going to have a bunch of bugs - it's the nature of the beast. Even though I'm primarily an IE user, I have no doubt that the FF folks will get the bugs fixed much more quickly than the IE people would have in the same situation, since FF ALWAYS fixes their problems faster. This whole thread is a non-issue, IMO First of all, this isn't a "new" browser. Second, I haven't seen ANY of the bugs that I've read about, not a single one. Third, I haven't seen longer load times.. it loads quicker than 3.0.10 did for me.
3.0.8 through 3.0.10 had tons of bugs that I encountered. I'm just happy that those are gone. |

| reply to Matt That mozillazine thread was about Fx 2. I don't think that has much relevance to Fx 3 and 3.5 as 3 is hugely different from 2 in a lot ways. It could be the reason but until I read some threads where users of Fx 3.5 are claiming the shared dll's in IE8 and Fx 3.5 are the sole cause of the slowness in starting Fx 3.5 for many...well, I will remain skeptical until then.
As for "Mozilla" saying to clear IE temp files if Fx 3.5 starts slowly that was a MOD at the Mozillazine forums that said that. Mozillazine has NO affiliation with Mozilla and does not speak for Mozilla developers who seldom, if ever, read those forums (except for two who read the Fx Features and SeaMonkey Features because they are trying to port extensions from Fx to SeaMonkey in their spare time).
The thread at Mozillazine forums where the Mod suggested this as a remedy is locked so I could not ask in that thread. I started a new thread because I am thoroughly confused as to why Fx is somehow using IE's temp folder. That locked thread said nothing about IE8. It states that Fx 3.5 slowness in starting is likely due to any version of IE's temp files if they have not been cleared before starting Fx 3.5. That doesn't make any sense to me. Besides, the temp files in IE 7 and 8 usually clear themselves when IE is closed. They don't frequently in IE6 and below but I haven't seen them build up in ver 7 or 8 so for many reasons this "solution" doesn't make sense to me. Besides wouldn't the obvious solution be to limit the size of the TIF to 50MB? If you make it lower IE complains which is a shame as with other browsers you can set it at Zero which I always do. But 50MB is not large and I just can't see how that can keep Fx 3.5 from starting quickly. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. One note though, IE doesn't clear temp folders by default. You have to set it to do so:

| Yep, you are right about having to set IE to clear TIF on closing...I'd forgotten since I have set it that way for as long as I can remember. (I also remember all the threads here in Microsoft forum about how IE 5 and 6 would not clear TIF on closing even when that was checked and the suggestions for fixing it). -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. 2 edits | reply to matunga Increase Firefox Performance by Optimizing SQLite Database
For Windows, Linux and Mac OSX -
said by Web Upd8 : Since version 3.0, Firefox changed the way it saves your bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords and so on - it now uses SQLite databases. This has some advantages but also disadvantages because over time, the databases are growing in size and become fragmented and this affects the time Firefox needs to start. But the SQLite databases can be optimized which improves the Firefox startup time and from my experience, also improves the awasomebar performance which becomes much more responsive and faster!
How to optimize the SQLite databases in Firefox:

As suggested, I prepared a simple script that automagically executes at each boot. |
