VCR skips desired channel

What IS it with VCRs that won't allow you to select the channel you want to record a program off of?
The digital converter box works fine but my VCR (Panasonic) skips over channels 3 & 4 (among others) when you go to select the channel during the program setup process. My various workaround attempts haven't worked. Is there any way to force the thing to record from Channel 4? Are there any VCR brands out there that don't have minds of their own?

If the time has come to get a DVD recorder, how do I know it wouldn't do the same thing?

The VCR should have a swicth where you choose either 3 or 4 to recor off of. If you get a DVD recorder it will have a built in digital tuenr so it won't be an issue. You won't even have to hook the converter box to it.

Is there a reason why you did not connect the digital converter box via RCA cables to the VCR? I am not sure your method would work because if you set the VCR to channel 3 or 4, the VCR will use its own internal tuner to record which now displays just snow.

It has to do with the VCR's tuner preprogramming.

The Op needs to set the VCR to the corresponding output channel of the convertor, but is unable to do so. The convertor box outputs line level signal on the yellow RCA but the OP wants to use the RF output from the convertor, hence the need to set the VCR vhannel to 3 or 4.

Stymied, try this and see if it solves your problem. Insure that the RF output of the convertor is connected to the RF input of the VCR. Then power on both units. Using the setup menu on the VCR look for an option to "autoscan" for channels. It maybe labeled autoprogram, channel scan or similar. Start the autoscan feature and the VCR will scan for all available channels.

Obviously it should only pickup and detect the output from the convertor box which most likely will be channel 3 or possibly 4.

The better way to do what you are trying to do is to use the red/white/yellow rca connections from the convertor to the VCR. In this method you would select the "aux" or "video" input on the VCR to record the signal from the convertor box.

Why not enter those channels in DIRECTLY WITH YOUR REMOTE??

The reason it skips them is: THEY ARE NOT "AUTO PROGRAMMED" so you have to manually enter them

THE VCR AUTOSCAN WORKED! I'M FLABBERGASTED. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I had emailed the manufacturer, Panasonic, but never got a reply.

I didn't try the RCA cables because the VCR has a lot of jack ports and I wasn't sure which ones to try. The autoset, as my machine had it, worked, so that's enough. HOORAY!

This confirms my opinion that dsl reports is one of the best websites out there.
