(I think it's going to go a lot better than the incandescents I've been replacing in the past).<br><br>If I don't have to carry that step ladder into the house, and teeter on the top of it as often, I'll be one happy camper.<br><br>Oh, and the "mercury issue" really doesn't bother me much, but hey, that's just me. <br><br>Feel free to continue with the debate, but it's a done deal for me.<br>I'll let you know if I have to carry the ladder in again tomorrow.  :D<br><small>--<br>I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem.</small>]]></description>

If there is too much heat buildup inside a fitting then a normal incandescent bulb would produce the same, if not worse condition.<br>The mercury issue is not really an issue, all florescent bulbs contain a minute amount of mercury, no one has complained before about dangers. ]]></description>

I have CFL's in several enclosures, including two ceiling fans, and are going onto their 5th great year with not problems. I got them at Walmart.<br><br>However, they take forever to warm up (I have to turn the light on at least 5 minutes before I go in the room) and one died very quickly. Mercury is so overblown. The CFLs out today have 1/500th the amount of mercury than the themometer your mom used to put in your mouth as a kid.<br><br>By the way they have CFL that are enclosed in a bulb to make it look like a regular bulb. So if overheating is an issue how coould they do that?<br> </div>Overheating is definitely an issue... The CFLs out today have 1/500th the amount of mercury than the themometer your mom used to put in your mouth as a kid.<br><br>By the way they have CFL that are enclosed in a bulb to make it look like a regular bulb. So if overheating is an issue how coould they do that?]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1143582"><b>Thane_Bitter</b></A> : You mention that these lights are in ceiling fans, because of the vibrations inherent in such a device there are specially designed incandescent "ceiling fan bulbs" that can better cope with the vibration.  <br><br>I have had mixed results in using CFLs in an inverted position inside an enclosed fixture, some last, others wear out very quickly.  Heat seems to shorten the lifespan of a CFL; then again some CFLs seem to have abnormally short life spans.<br><br>Just remember to properly dispose of any non-functional CFLs, people foolishly throw them out in the regular trash.  It's a waste of resources (the Hg can be recycled), and an environmental hazard (heavy metal).  Some stores even accept broken CFLs.]]></description>

Having said that, I have a 60W CFL (about 13W real-life) installed upside down in a jam-jar type bulb enclosure lighting the deck.  I have it under photocell control and it comes on for 6-10 hours every day. Give it a few years and LEDs will be they way and CFLs will be on they way out.]]></description>

It is enclosed AND upside down, and all CFLs i ever put in failed after a week or two - and they are only turned on for a minute or so per day (while we feed the dogs).. dont know if that's because it was enclosed or upside down.. or both.<br><br>FWIW we also put CLF's in the bathroom and are totally disappointed with the (lack of) brigtness & color.  Although we did find that a mixture of "cold" light CLFs and a "warmer" light CFLs provide an acceptable mixture of color and brightness..]]></description>

(Have to get my tall step ladder in the house, and sway around on top of it while removing the globe and changing the bulb).<br><br>I'd love to put CFL's in them.<br>Is it because it's actually some sort of heat/fire hazard? (Or another reason?)<br><br>Or, is it just that they won't last as long?<br><br>If it's just because they won't last as long, it couldn't be any worse than the standard light bulbs I've been replacing all too often.<br><br>Thanks in advance for any info.<br><small>--<br>I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem.</small>]]></description>
