Final update for anyone who might be interested. I did a fresh install of XP Pro SP3 and still had the problem. I deleted the video adapter (onboard in the 780G chipset) in device manager and let Windows reinstall it automatically. That seemed to have solved the problem. I have been running for 3 days now without a single incident.
