1 edit | [ID?] What is this? A HUGE beetle in Ohio.
I am in Cuyahoga county, OH ... I snapped this image today of a beetle (looks like a beetle anyways) that was about 1 1/2 inches long. Anyone know what this thing is?
Sorry about the bad image, I only had my cell phone on me. -- Cædite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius. |

| reply to Digital I used to see those things in Michigan all the time.
As a kid, I would play with them by sticking a small twig or leaf stem in their mouth. They would immediately clamp on really hard and you could then pick up the entire beetle by holding the twig you put in their mouth. -- for all your Linux questions |

I did the same, nearly did it with my finger, but I chickened out. Once it bit onto the twig and wouldn't let go like it did I didn't want to take a chance on the thing taking part of my finger with it ... lol. -- Cædite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius. |

1 edit | reply to Digital I second the stag beetle....I never thought em much as a kid, but we had plenty of June Bugs...same idea without the giant pinchers.
Those things happen to hit ya in teh face while flying around...hurts! I about lost an eye to one when I was a child..evil bugs.. they sound like a small helicopter.
I got 'em back tho...he ended up in a bottle of ethanol thanks to my bug net. --

| That's not a stag beetle. I found a Ohio bug site. Try the Blue-margined Ground Beetle, also here: Bug Guide. I'll bet this guy runs fast. He's a hunter. |

If he's that big, perhaps you should let him hold that cell phone and take a picture of you in pain after the bite? "Look what I caught..." |

LOL, he probably could have held it ... all while crushing my phone. That thing could have probably bit my finger off if he wasn't so afraid of the incoming smashing. -- Cædite eos.
