| SpeedTouch 536v6 setup for Embarq dsl
Is anyone successfully using the 536 with Embarq's dsl?
Embarq appears to be unique among ISPs in that they do not use PPPoE or oA. The best I can tell, they use ETHoA (ethernet over atm or "enet-encap" in the Zyxel config). Their multiplexing appears to be llc/snap (again a bit unique and older).
The 536's web interface appears limited to PPPoE or oA or bridged. However, it does appear much more flexible from the CLI. I have been successful at getting the pvc, atm, and ethernet interfaces setup. The modem syncs, and I can do atm loopback pings just fine. However, I cannot seem to get a wan ip interface setup and the routing working.
Any help is appreciated. I literally have a *pile* of Zyxel 660's by my desk at work that I've been through with the two circuits there. AFAIC they are real junk. I'd love to get the 536 up and running.

| The 660s do not appear to perform well on long loops (19k+). They often must retrain and at times loose sync for no explainable reason. I have logs for over a year which show two separate circuits bouncing often more than twice per day.
Prior to my pulling out some local inside contacts, Embarq's response to my problems was to simply send me another modem. Hence the pile (6 or 7 over the last 12 -18 months).
I have a dsl test set which trains in 10 seconds and never looses sync.
From my reading it appears that some modem HW/FW combinations handle poor line conditions and longer loops better. The SpeedTouch was one of these, and I picked up a used one for next to nothing to give a try. |

2 edits | Anything over 18k ft is considered Extended Reach DSL, sometimes not often but sometimes the proper circuitry necessary to maintain sync has not been installed. Now this may not be your case but it's worth looking into.
DSL in general over 18k is not going to perform well do to physical limitations, hence extended reach was developed. Possibly in the future this will change however there is no reason changing your modem to a different brand will effect your situation.
That being said, PPPoE will not work it's no longer supported on embarq networks. Your best option from what you have listed is bridged mode. You were correct on enet encap LLC guess.
Overall I think from what you are describing you have an issue in your line possibly something in the extended reach hardware. I would call into Tech support, get to a Tier 2 rep and look into getting a tech sent out to check your entire loop for issues. |

| I've had a cable tech assigned to the ticket for three weeks now, and we're trying a series of things. The loop ohms out fine. A week and a half ago an active conditioner was installed mid-loop. The loop tested good to 8.5M after that. The error rates, however, went to an eye-popping 300+CRC/min. I got to looking a some further parameters on the loop and found what appear to be reflection issues (aka impedance problems). I also remembered that I had a similar issue with a T1 that ran in the same cable some years ago. So... this week the cable tech will build a new par on a completely different cable (the one which now holds all the T1's running out of that CO). The problem appears to be with an old segment of "dry" cable which is no longer truly dry.
At any rate, I still plan on replacing the 660s. If the SpeedTouch will not work, I will probably look into using Cisco WIC-1ADSL cards.
Thanks for all the input! |

fbcsupport Premium join:2006-09-23 Dunn, NC | The dsl I'm type this post on is 24,850' and maxes out at 1500k. This loop is actually very clean and on several sections of new cable.
However...
Are you saying that bridging the modem will provide a more stable link? |

Tarheels Fan Premium join:2006-01-05 | No, saying that if you can only set it to PPPoE or oA - then bridging would allow your router to pull an IP since you can't run PPPoE or PPPoA with your current provisioning. |

| reply to fbcsupport Well, I found a ETHoA config for the 536v6 which works fine with Embarq. I'll attach the ini file for reference. Here is the link to where I found it in case the attachment does not go through: »ipstore.us/software/templates/5x···_7xx.tpl
Works fine "as-is" with Embarq's current setup.
Thanks for all the comments. |

| Glad you were able to get it to work. Here is the statement on the .ini file that makes it work with Embarq's DHCP:
set var=CONF_DESCRIPTION value="tr(3,Internet Access via Ethernet over ATM (EthoA), using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Network Address Translation (NAT) and Firewall.)" |

jamorris Premium join:2009-01-09 Snow Hill, NC | reply to fbcsupport I have a 660 at 24K using ERdsl. It is very stable. I have had no issues with stability.
I do wish they offered higher speeds, but it works.
