[Serious] What could this be?

Twas bushwhacking the Gatineau Hills and came across this installation, whose purpose baffles me. This thing is bigger than appears, the vents on the 4 corners are about 100FT square and the ground is raised all around there so I'm guessing an underground structure is covered underneath. Cold war installation or just an old dump they put a Police communications tower on top of? The topography of the area puts it on top of a fairly large hill and would give a commanding view if not for the trees. The road leading to here is actually paved, though not very well and is crumbling badly. Lots of cameras, but not a single no trespassing sign or signs of any kind aside from the one I took a picture of. That blue door has a heavy duty prison type lock on it. Any ideas?

Makes me wonder how old that place is.

Didn't hull amalgamate into Gatineau in 1975?

The police sign clearly shows the "city of Hull".

I've climbed the mountain before and been to that site. There is another structure next to it (If I remember correctly) that isn't in the photographs.

Hull didn't amalgamate with Gatineau until a few years ago.

I'd guess an old bunker. Not sure what else it could be.

Fixed

It's clearly something; it is odd that the lamp post (with 3 cameras) also has an antenna. The tower located on the block structure has what appears to be a directional log antenna, if you can orient it to the overhead photo, the direction it is pointing might give some cues. (Found the building via google maps, but I still can not find any information about it - EDIT - there is a large installation to the NE, the entire complex is set within the park and encircled by a road - anyone know what it is?)

Could be a cold war relic that was handed over to the local fuzz; funny how so much money was spent to protect the elected officials from a bomb blast, while the rest of the populous (the mass that elected them) were told to duck and cover.

It wouldn't be a water reservoir would it?
All the concrete water reservoirs here are now monitored. I'm sure you'd like to know if somebody was screwing around with your water.
There is a very similar looking structure like this in the UBC endowment lands here in Vancouver just off 16th Avenue.

In line with one of the runways at Ottawa?

Looks like an ILS outer marker.

Ok, found your spot.

While the distance is right (10Nm for an outer marker), the angle is wrong. I actually pulled up the approach pubs and most of the points are further to the SW of your protected antenna.

So, it does not look like it is an outer marker.

BTW, the underground location is probably for power generation as this antenna probably packs a juicy demand

An ILS marker for the International Airport would be Federal not municipality?

Perhaps its an emergency response tx repeater or something like that.....

It's possible that the feds may pay the local police to do patrol, but if it was an ILS marker there would definitely be NavCanada signage there somewhere.

However, the location and distance place is right for CYRO (Rockliffe). The airport is no longer IFR certified though and has no published approaches.

Having said that, if it was an outer marker for RO, then it should no longer be in use, and is not on low level charts, nor the Ottawa terminal control area map. so, this is no longer used (if it ever was) for air navigation.

I'm pretty sure its a weather station. Another structure not in that picture (going by memory) is a wooden structure which I think had generators in it (doors were open when I saw it 3+ years ago). Remember seeing them and the high voltage warning signs.

This was a few years ago though.

I'll have to ask my wife who dragged me that forsaken mountain where I also spotted the man-eating grizzly mountain snake that jumped out at me. I didn't scream like a little girl and jumped out of its way, in case she brings that up It looked almost like this snake »Can anyone identify this snake? except it had fangs, at least 8 feet long, showed no fear and had fur and growled. (thats the story I'm sticking with)

Will ask if she took pictures of it.

Pretty sure i saw a sign stating its a weather station or similar when I was last there 3+ years ago.

No signs of nearby power lines (nothing in the pictures) or detectable by Google’s maps. Seeing as it’s at the foot of the park and somewhat on the hill, I think it’s a reservoir, though the cameras, and buried utilities is a bit odd. The attached PDF map marks the area in question with a small blue rectangle, no explanation for that symbol is given.

Most likely as water reservoir. The antenna sends data to a central monitoring station. The post-like devices are vents. The TV cameras are there for security. After all, it's infrastructure.

Based on that winter view of it:

It looks like a weather station. I saw one very similar near Peterbrough at the Silver Lake thing.

But there is no visable instrumentation (anemometers, Stevenson screens, wind vain, etc.), although the equipment used for determine atmospheric visibility vague resembles a pair of cameras tilted down and pointed towards each other. (example: »www.columbiaweather.com/Images/a···lity.jpg)

Finally figured out what the massive complex nearby is for, it is called "Centre Asticou, formation professionnelle, gouvernement fédéral"; It’s a federally run education complex for civil servants. »www.csps-efpc.gc.ca/cus/asticou-eng.asp
