An interesting USB-to-RJ45 dongle. However, I don't think MJ USB device will work with this dongle mainly because an MJ USB device expects a Windows OS host to run (its own) SIP software to talk to its USB device.

Hmm ..., very interesting. I thought the whole inside case of a microwave is made from metal sheets. That said, I wonder what will happen if a metal plate placed inside a microwave and is well grounded to make connection to the metal case? ;)

I don't know, but I remember watching David Letterman microwave some lightbulbs on the Late Show (both lightbulbs and oven from G.E., of course). I couldn't find a link for the clip, but this guy tried the same thing:

If you are a tech savvy and have friends who own some NAT/Firewall WiFi router with a built-in USB2 port and supported by OpenWRT and some of VoiPBlaster units to spare, then you can install the Fobbit directory server code on your router to serve them. This way, you can call each other for free.

I had done this using a computer back then. The only problem I had encountered using this approach is the call quality degraded substantially with packets lost. I believe this is due to the nature of a G723.1 CoDec.

No PC, no "weird mj experience", no sleaze...

I still don't see what you are asking for, other than perhaps a smaller sized ATA. The ones I've seen are plenty small enough for me.

What's the difference!? The difference is that the gizmo will automatically connect to headquarters when it is first plugged in and do whatever it is that magicjack does when you plug it in. After that, you have the usual beautiful ATA experience instead of the weird mj experience.

When grandad is starving because he is paying Bell $70/month for stuff he can get through voip for peanuts, and finally decides that the voip thing he heard about might be the ticket, he buys magicjack because it is a no-brainer to set up (apparently - I have never seen one).

Make this gizmo a no-brainer to set up, and the better sound and reliability, the lack of mj's sleaze, and the bells and whistles that mj does not have, will convince grandad to try it and allow him to put on weight.

Is it really that hard to build in a program that does the setup for you, mj style?

Anybody can figure out how to go to his callcentric panel and play around with the settings later, but you have to get him past the initial setup and get the magic dial tone. Once you have the buyer past the setup, you are home free.

Yeah, you can get a USB adapter plug to plug into the wall, but I don't think that's what you meant.

I forgot about that little detail. Well, either plug it into a wall socket or forget about it and let MJ rule the world.

Umm ... don't you have to leave a PC on to get power from a USB port?

Yeah, you can get a USB adapter plug to plug into the wall, but I don't think that's what you meant.

That then connects to headquarters and registers you with vosp A and gives you a phone number?

If Dan can do it for $40, why can't a more respectable vendor do it for $40 + x?

They would have some good advertising hooks: no pc has to be left on; nothing is installed on your pc; uses the proven technology of sip; and you can trust vosp A, which has a solid record unlike some fly-by-night outfits.
